For over 40 years, German International School New York (GISNY), an independent, bilingual Pre-K through Grade 12 college preparatory institution, has been preparing both locals and expats for their future journeys. German-inspired and internationally minded, GISNY encourages students to experiment, collaborate, create, and think critically as they build their well-rounded educational foundation. Our small, vibrant community is dedicated to nurturing both the mind and the heart, providing a safe and welcoming environment that feels like an extended family. Situated close to New York City, our beautiful campus offers wide-open green spaces with plenty of room to explore, play, or just recharge. The German Language School at GISNY provides immersive German language classes for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 (ages 4-18) as well as for adults at both beginner and advanced levels. Our programs emphasize a holistic, hands-on learning experience that fosters academic excellence and individual growth. Classes are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.


GISNY is seeking a dynamic candidate to join our team as Head of Language School. The Head of Language School is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and growth of the Language School, fostering a vibrant and inclusive learning environment. This role ensures the successful implementation of academic programs, faculty management, student enrollment, and operational efficiency.


The Head of Language School reports to the Head of School.


JOB FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions and responsibilities include but are not limited to:


Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for the school's growth and academic excellence.
  • Oversee curriculum development and ensure high-quality language instruction.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in teaching methodologies.
  • Represent the school in the community and build strong relationships with stakeholders.


Academic & Program Oversight

  • Supervise and support faculty to maintain instructional quality and student engagement.
  • Ensure programs align with language proficiency standards and best practices.
  • Monitor student progress and implement assessment strategies to improve outcomes.
  • Expand course offerings, workshops, and extracurricular language activities.


Faculty & Staff Management

  • Recruit, train, and evaluate teaching staff to uphold instructional excellence.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for educators.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive work environment.


Operations & Administration

  • Oversee enrollment processes, scheduling, and student services in close cooperation with Registrar.
  • Communicate timely and regularly with parents, students and other stakeholders in all pertinent matters.
  • Apply to and administer grant from German government.
  • Manage budget and resource allocation in close cooperation with Business Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with educational regulations and accreditation requirements.


Community Engagement & Marketing

  • Develop partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and educational institutions.
  • Design marketing initiatives to attract and retain students in close cooperation with Marketing and Development Manager.
  • Organize cultural events, language immersion programs, and outreach activities.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Education, Linguistics, or a related field (preferred)
  • Proven experience in educational leadership, preferably in a language school setting
  • Strong background in language education, curriculum development, and assessment
  • Mission driven with excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize, take initiative and work independently
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong team player
  • Ability to manage budgets, staff, and program development
  • Very strong customer orientation and people skills
  • Bilingual in German and English; outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer software literacy with Office 365
