Job Description
Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a Germanna regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing / kayaking, and many other activities.
Germanna is seeking to hire a part-time Career Advisor to assist high school students and their families as they prepare for career training or post-secondary education. The Career Advisor plans and executes outreach and career education activities at a service area High School on behalf of the College. The Career Advisor offers a one-stop service that facilitates a student from application to enrollment in courses at Germanna Community College. This position works closely with departments across the College and organizations within the community.
Reporting to the Lead Career Advisor within the Dual Enrollment & High School Programs team, the Career Advisor identifies and participates in outreach and career planning activities for high school juniors and seniors and their parents / families. The Career Advisor serves as an ambassador for the College and cultivates strong relationships with prospective students, parents / families, high school personnel, and area employers.
The Career Advisor advises and counsels high school students and other student populations, as needed, on post-secondary graduation goals, specifically exploring the benefits of community college enrollment through in person, e-mail, text messages, social media, and other forms of electronic communication, and phone engagement. This position coordinates on-campus tours, enrollment programs, and college and career-oriented activities targeted towards prospective students and their parents / families. The Career Advisor coordinates the ongoing strategic communications to prospective students and maintains a case management system to report outcomes to the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and the College.
The Career Advisor supports Dual Enrollment and Independent Dual Enrollment students to identify and participate in educational opportunities at Germanna Community College. The Career Advisor assists in prospective student recruitment, enrollment and registration of new and continuing students, and the facilitation of course and program expansion at their respective area high school.
The Career Advisor also assists Caroline High School's Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs and will support the creation and / or expansion of programs and educational opportunities for Caroline High School students. In partnership with Career & Transfer Services, community organizations, and local employers, the Career Advisor assists students in identifying Work-Based Learning (WBL) opportunities such as paid internships, externships, apprenticeships, and part-time employment while enrolled in high school and / or at Germanna Community College.
The Part-Time Career Advisor will report to a specific service area high school during the School Year. The high school will provide the Career Advisor with an office or workstation space, and access to school internet, data systems, and other technologies to facilitate career advising.
When the high school is closed, the Career Advisor may be required to report to the nearest Germanna Community College campus or site to report to work.
The Career Advisor is typically assigned 1,450 hours per Fiscal Year and their work schedule is determined by their supervisor or designee, and based on the needs of the College.
