Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate and devoted Recreation Specialist to be part of our dynamic team at three supportive housing sites in Manhattan. This full-time role involves creating a lively and supportive environment for our residents by designing, organizing, and executing activities that cater to their specific needs. The objective is to offer safe and enjoyable leisure time options that enhance self-esteem and alleviate stress through engaging arts, games, excursions, and fitness activities. Candidates with a background in compassionate care for vulnerable populations will find this opportunity particularly rewarding.

Key Responsibilities

• Foster a fun, nurturing, and inclusive atmosphere for all residents.
• Organize and lead social and peer support events that enhance community interaction.
• Collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team to craft and deliver a plethora of recreational and life skills programs, including daily living activities, shopping, exercise, arts and crafts, and more.
• Encourage full participation from residents to enrich social engagement and optimize the use of recreational services.
• Establish relationships with outside recreational programs and facilities to broaden opportunities for residents.
• Accompany residents on group outings to promote engagement and community involvement.
• Compile a resource guide detailing accessible and affordable recreational options within the area.
• Manage inventory of recreational materials and supplies.
• Plan and execute special events within the facilities to celebrate community and cultural diversity.
• Document all recreational activities and maintain precise records.
• Communicate any resident concerns to appropriate social service personnel and collaborate on interventions.
• Participate in staff meetings, case conferences, and training sessions to bolster professional development.
• Assist in creating and maintaining informational displays in public areas reflecting cultural, seasonal, and programmatic themes.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
  
  

Required Skills

• Strong interpersonal skills coupled with maturity and reliability.
• Proficiency in developing engaging recreational programs.
• Comfort with crisis intervention and familiarity with harm reduction principles.
• Experience working in a residential setting and/or with individuals facing mental health challenges is advantageous.
  
  

Qualifications

• A high school diploma, HSE, or GED is required.
• A minimum of 2-3 years' experience in providing recreational services within a human services context is required.
• Preferred experience in developing program curricula and facilitating activities tailored for vulnerable populations.
• A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
• Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish) are preferred.
• Narcan training is a plus.
