An exciting opportunity is available to join Gewalt Hamilton Associates (GHA), an employee-owned, multi-faceted civil engineering and land surveying company that has built a reputation of civil engineering with a personal approach. We are seeking an Assistant Village Engineer to join our growing Civil Design team in Vernon Hills, IL.
How you will make an impact:
The Assistant Village Engineer will report to the Division Director and will be responsible for assisting our Village Engineers in the management responsibility of our Municipal Engineering Clients. The ideal applicant will have extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering, excellent customer service skills, strong written and oral communication skills, prepare understand and interpret engineering construction plans, specifications, and other documents. This role is an exempt, salary, position. We offer a hybrid work environment.
Responsibilities:
- Provide staff support to a variety of boards and commissions including the presenting of projects and programs at public meetings; attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of engineering.
- Oversee and review the plans of consulting engineers and private contractors; recommend adjustments of engineering designs; ensure compliance with specifications; and applicable Village codes, State and Federal requirements.
- Coordinate assigned activities with consultants, engineers, developers, contractors, other Village departments and divisions, outside agencies, and the general public; provide consultation and advice on construction projects.
- Prepare progress reports on projects under construction; maintain records of changes and field notes.
- Conduct various engineering studies and prepare reports.
- Effectively interact with the citizens of municipal clients in responding to requests for services and enforcement of Village ordinances, when required.
- Act as the Village Engineer as necessary.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications
What you will bring to Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
- Hold a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Illinois or obtain it within 6 months of hire.
Experience:
- Have a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
- Have at least 4 years of civil engineering experience and 2 years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience with Microstation/GEOPAK and/or AutoCAD/Civil 3D
- Must be able to collaborate with other team members and have good interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Independently identify, evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering criteria and standards across engineering disciplines.
- Manage project schedules and train engineers and/or technicians on projects.
- Self-starting, detail-oriented individual with organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Visit project sites to troubleshoot complex construction issues and be able to effectively communicate desired outcomes.
- Complete engineering tasks with limited oversight and seek feedback at appropriate periods of work under the supervision and mentoring of project managers.
- Work in a team setting with other team members within all divisions of the company.
- Strong sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet deadlines.
- Responsible for maintaining technical knowledge through completion of various training initiatives; attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, and attending in-house systems/management training.

Salary : $90,000 - $110,000
