An exciting opportunity is available to join Gewalt Hamilton Associates (GHA), an employee-owned, multi-faceted civil engineering and land surveying company that has built a reputation of civil engineering with a personal approach. We are seeking an Engineering Technician III to join our growing Construction & Survey team in Vernon Hills, IL.
How you will make an impact:
The Engineering Technician III will report to the Project Manager. This role is a non-exempt, hourly position.
Responsibilities:
- IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities Certification required.
- Perform moderately challenging duties including assisting in the preparation of detailed technical reports, exhibits, engineering plans, calculations, contract specifications, and opinions of probable cost.
- Possess the ability to interpret and apply state and local policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations, and prepare reports, specifications, plans, studies, and designs for projects with limited oversight.
- Serve as the lead on-site project representative performing Phase III construction engineering duties as it relates to the process of observing construction improvements to ensure contractors work complies with contract plans, specifications, and standards.
- Knowledge of and perform required documentation for Phase III Construction Engineering utilizing County, State, and Tollway guidelines and processes.
- Perform plan checking including reviewing and finalizing material take-offs and quality assurance.
- Review the work of others for completeness and accuracy.
- Maintaining technical knowledge through completion of various training initiatives; attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, and attending internal technical/management training.
- Assist engineering or senior technical staff in the preparation of engineering designs and reports, related drawings, contract specifications, and construction project opinions of probable cost.
- Communicates with project managers and clients regarding project issues; attend and/or moderate meetings and provides meeting minutes.
- Perform a variety of related office or field tasks to gather, analyze and record data; prepare a variety of memos, letters and other correspondence related to plan reviews.
- Perform moderately complex technical engineering functions in both field and office environments and requires the ability to work independently and in a team environment, managing various, simultaneous projects with minimal errors.

What you will bring to Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc
Education:
- Must have a high school diploma or a High School Equivalency (HSE) Certificate
- A bachelors or associate degree in an engineering technical field is preferred, or eight (8) years with combination of education and experience in civil or municipal engineering, public works, construction, or field related experience
Experience:
- Four (4) years of civil or municipal engineering, public works, construction, or field related experience including two (2) years as a major contributor on deliverable development or project leader.
- Must be capable of driving/operating a motor vehicle for company business, maintain a valid Illinois Drivers License, and have a registered, insured personal vehicle.
- Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation OpenRoads Designer is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to independently identify, evaluate, select, and apply engineering criteria and standards to lead the development of technical documents across select engineering disciplines.
- Apply discipline design criteria and independently obtain field data and record information to be used in production of engineering drawings and reports.
- Possesses an understanding of typical workflows with low complexity projects.
- Self-starting, detail-oriented individual that will work in a collaborative environment completing engineering design tasks according to scope/schedule/effort expectations with limited oversight.
- Ability to manage personal schedule to adhere to multiple project deadlines while communicating progress status.
- Assists in project-related communication and meetings with clients and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrates the ability to technically mentor and train junior-level employees.
- Assists in the development of portions of project proposals.

- Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- PDF Editing Software (Adobe, Bluebeam, etc.)
- Work is performed in both an office environment and outdoors and requires moderate physical demands, including sitting, standing, or walking on uneven surfaces and/or exposure to inclement or extreme weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
