Position Overview:
The Legal Trainer – Removal Defense is responsible for designing, developing, and delivering high-quality legal training programs focused on humanitarian immigration and removal defense. This role plays a pivotal part in equipping legal practitioners, caseworkers, and support staff with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively navigate complex removal proceedings and related legal processes.
The Legal Trainer collaborates with subject matter experts (SMEs), the Legal Quality Assurance (QA) team, and leadership to ensure that all training content meets legal standards, reflects current policies, and supports organizational performance goals. This is a hybrid role requiring both virtual and in-person training facilitation, with occasional national and international travel.
Responsibilities:
1. Legal Training Development
- Design, develop, and maintain comprehensive training materials focused on removal defense, including curricula, manuals, slide decks, and reference guides.
- Ensure all training content complies with current immigration law, agency guidelines, and organizational standards.
- Regularly update training content in response to legal or procedural changes, including case law updates and policy shifts.
2. Training Facilitation
- Lead interactive virtual and in-person training sessions for new hires, existing staff, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Schedule and coordinate training delivery in collaboration with supervisors and team leads, ensuring timely responses to training requests.
- Travel as required to deliver in-person trainings at field offices or partner locations.
3. Learning Platforms & Assessment
- Manage legal training content within Google Classroom and other e-learning platforms, ensuring consistency, relevance, and engagement.
- Develop and administer knowledge assessments, diagnostic tools, and performance evaluations to gauge understanding and learning outcomes.
- Analyze assessment results to identify learning gaps and recommend training improvements.
4. Training Needs Assessment
- Collaborate with the QA team, department heads, and legal supervisors to conduct training needs assessments.
- Proactively identify skills or knowledge gaps in legal teams and design targeted interventions to address them.
- Support continuous learning and professional development initiatives for legal staff.
5. Onboarding & Performance Support
- Facilitate structured onboarding and “On-the-Job Training” (OJT) for new legal team members specializing in removal defense.
- Conduct refresher trainings to ensure sustained legal proficiency and compliance with best practices.
- Deliver ongoing coaching and constructive feedback during the 90-day probation period.
- Document and share probation feedback with the trainee, SME, and supervisor in alignment with HR protocols.
6. General & Evolving Duties
- Remain informed on emerging immigration legal trends, practices, and federal guidance related to removal proceedings.
- Participate in cross-functional projects, committees, and working groups to enhance organizational legal capacity.
- Perform additional duties and assume new responsibilities in response to evolving programmatic needs.

Skills and Qualifications:
- Minimum 2 years of direct experience in humanitarian immigration law, specifically within removal defense.
- Demonstrated experience in legal training, adult learning principles, or legal instruction (virtual and/or in-person).
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Political Science, or related field; Paralegal Certificate or JD strongly preferred.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts in clear, accessible language.
- Self-motivated and detail-oriented, with strong time management and organizational abilities.
- Confident facilitator with strong interpersonal skills and cultural competency to work with diverse teams.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
- Adaptable and solutions-driven with a proactive approach to challenges and evolving priorities.
