Job Summary / Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Hours will regularly be adjusted to meet schedules of our clients and may include weekend, night, and early morning hours.

Tasks include, but are not limited to sample collection, sample preparation, sample testing, field observations, and documentation of construction activities pertaining to soil, concrete, grout, mortar and asphalt. The position requires the employee to clearly identify, verbally communicate and document test results and activities.

Employee will under close supervision by higher level technicians or staff professionals, perform routine field and/or laboratory work, transport samples or documents, and perform non-technical functions and office tasks.

  • Soils - performs in-place density tests by nuclear, moisture density (Proctor), sieve analysis, samples soils.
  • Aggregates – samples and performs sieve analysis and Field Density Tests
  • Portland Cement Concrete – samples, performs air content and slump tests, prepares and tests compressive and flexural strength tests, casts mortar and grout test specimens, and obtains core specimens.
  • Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) – samples and assists in performance of routine HMA tests in field and laboratory. Field tests include use of nuclear density gauge and core machine.

Laboratory tests many include handling of solvents and samples at high temperatures

  • Review specifications for civil and structural plans and identify sections applicable to the scope of work
  • Transport, operate and care for a nuclear density gauge as assigned, meeting all safety, care and maintenance guidelines.
  • Provides assistance to other field and/or laboratory personnel
  • Transports equipment, specimens or documents to field personnel, laboratory, clients or other offices
  • Provides physical assistance in equipment setup
  • Clean equipment, vehicles and work areas
  • Assists other technicians or professional staff on routine tasks
  • Will be placed in a progressively increased role of training and responsibility in work assignments.
  • Document and communicate non-conforming items to designated supervisor
  • Review specification for civil and structural plans and identify sections applicable to the scope of work
  • Perform drilled shaft observations and documentation
  • Perform observation and documentation of reinforcing steel

This position requires the employee to learn the flow of the organization, what services are provided and important details of the trade, as well as to understand the company’s role in each project.

Minimum Education, Training, Certification and/or Experience Requirements:

  • 3 – 8 years of experience
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Concrete Testing, ACI Field 1
  • Nuclear Gauge Certification
  • ODOT Material Sampler Certification

Other Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid state of residence driver’s license
  • Clean Driving record
  • Ability to be insured under all applicable Corporation insurance policies and requirements
  • Ability to pass a drug test
  • Daily travel to and from construction sites, generally within 100 miles from the home office is expected. Short term, out of town work, generally lasting less than 2 weeks is possible. Long term out of town assignments may be required occasionally with advance notice of planned dates.
  • May be required to work protracted and irregular hours to meet deadlines including overtime and occasional weekends.

  • Must be able to use a computer and a general knowledge of MS Office including Word and Excel
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate and confidential records and prepare easily understandable reports for documentation
  • Must be able to receive, understand, and execute written and verbal directions
  • Ability to learn company specific software and programs
  • Ability to be trained and to follow directions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to dress, speak & act professionally and appropriately
  • Ability to deal with stressful situations, multiple priorities and hectic schedules calmly and courteously
  • Ability to work ethically, honestly and safely at all times
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as job site specs, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Dexterity to utilize delicate and small laboratory equipment
  • Distinguish colors and shades of colors to describe soils and analyze results
  • Sufficient math and science skills to analyze results
  • Must use good judgment to identify and resolve problems on the job, refer problems to supervisor when needed

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to move, lift or carry objects or materials up to 100 lbs. without assistance.
  • In addition to manual lifting, body motions and movements include: bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing
  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding
  • Ability to physically maneuver construction sites and excavations
  • Visual / hearing ability sufficient to comprehend written / verbal communications in the

English language, including the ability to communicate directly and over the telephone and be understood.

Compensation:

This position is classified as an Hourly, Full-Time, Permanent position. We offer an excellent compensation and benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, PTO,
