GENERAL SUMMARY

 

Reports to the Director of Elite Sport and Fitness.  Has a clinical reporting relationship with the Medical Director and Program Coordinator of the Sports Medicine Program.  Evaluates and provides care to sports medicine patients with dysfunction in any of the following systems: musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and integumentary.  Under the direction of the Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Program, provides preventive care, emergency care, and treatment of those individuals participating in the sporting events being covered by the ATC.  Includes age specific needs and cultural considerations in the plans of care.Communicates effectively with internal and external customers, with members of the clinical team, and with members of the therapy department.Treats patients in the following settings: acute hospital, outpatient clinic, and area school sports events.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Evaluates patient’s physical, cognitive, and functional status, using standardized tests and measures.  Incorporates pertinent medical information into the evaluation.  Age specific, language and cultural needs are incorporated into the individualized treatment plan.
  2. Formulates individualized treatment plans consistent with objective findings.  Establishes time based objective, and functional short and long-term goals.
  3. Administers treatment and monitors each patient’s responses to the treatments.  The treatment plan is adjusted according to patient responses.
  4. Complies with department documentation policy.  Critical elements in documentation are thoroughness, timeliness, and legibility.
  5. Communicates effectively with patients, caregivers, physicians, members of the healthcare and sports medicine team, and department peers and director.
  6. Discusses clinical findings, goals, treatments with patients and when appropriate with families/caregivers.  Involves patients’ families in the evaluation and treatment process especially when working with pediatric and adolescent patients.  Ensures that instructions and conversation with the above individuals are understood by all parties concerned.
  7. Participates in discharge planning with patients/caregivers, physicians, coaches, and other personnel as needed to promote timely and safe discharge arrangements.
  8. Complies with all issues related patient privacy.
  9. Bills for sports medicine/rehabilitation interventions accurately and ethically.
  10. Oversees all care provided by athletic training students and techs.
  11. Assists in keeping work area clean, sanitary and orderly.
  12. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences and in-services.
  13. Maintains state licensure by completing continuing education units as required by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
  14. Attends department staff meetings.  Attends all facility and department required educational sessions.
  15. Supports the Hospital’s and department’s performance improvement efforts designed to enhance patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and improve the utilization of the Hospital’s human, capital and physical resources.
  16. Complies with the organizational attendance policy and use of the electronic timekeeping system.
  17. Utilizes time efficiently and productively to enhance patient care, department operations and the financial success of the department, program and organization.
  18. Will manage hours and any overtime will be preapproved by the Director.
  19. Completes all competency/skills assessment requirements. 
  20. Complies with dress code.
  21. Completes other duties as assigned.
  22. Works hours outside of normal business day to accommodate for contracted school coverage and clinical coverage to include early mornings, evenings, and weekends, as required or needed.
  23. Understands that the workload and total hours worked per pay period changes based on the sport’s season of the contracted school and clinical volumes, and therefore manages time effectively.

 

 

Qualifications


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

  1. Must have the physical strength to perform the following lifting tasks:
  • Floor to waist - 50 pounds
  • 14” to waist - 50 pounds
  • Waist to shoulder -35 pounds
  • Shoulder to overhead - 20 pounds
  • Carry 45 pounds for 30 feet
  • Push 50 pounds/force for 30 feet
  • Pull 50 pounds/force for 30 feet

 

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

 

  1. Reports to the hospital Director of Elite Sport and Fitness.
  2. Has a clinical reporting relationship with the Medical Director of Sports Medicine and the Program Coordinator of the Sports Medicine Program.
  3. Oversees the work of department techs and volunteers.
  4. May assist in the clinical instruction of an Athletic Training student.

 

 

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 

  1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the various settings of the care continuum.  Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of the patient population served.
  2. Current Illinois state licensure as an Athletic Trainer or license pending as such.
  3. Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  4. Emotional stability conducive to dealing with moderately stressful situations, and effective working relationships with customers, peers, department and organizational leadership, physicians and other health care providers.
  5. Maintain “ATC” credentials by completing continued education units as required by the National Athletic Trainers’ Associations Board of Certification.
  6. Basic computer skills, including use of internet, email, and Microsoft Office software.

 

 

INFECTION EXPOSURE RISK LEVEL

 

Category I – Maximal Risk - This job usually involves contact with patient or patient specimens. Exposure to blood, body fluids and tissue is possible. The Hepatitis B vaccine shall be made available.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

  1. Works in patient care areas where there are few discomforts due to environmental temperature, dust, dirt, and noise.
  2. Works in outdoor environment where there is exposure to weather conditions, temperature extremes, dust, dirt, and noise.
  3. Works with patients and may be exposed to contagious diseases or infectious materials, but potential for personal harm and injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions and equipment are used.
