GENERAL SUMMARY
A Registered Professional Nurse provides skilled, technical nursing care to students, pre-school through high school, and school personnel.
GIBSON AREA HOSPITAL & HEALTH SERVICES MISSION STATEMENT

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintains communications with supervising registered nurse, administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of students.
2. Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.
3. To oversee state mandates for school districts for health related issues:
a. Physicals
b. Immunizations
c. Dental Exam Requirements
d. Vision & Hearing screening
e. Automated External Defibrillator Program for Physical Fitness Facilities
4. Review of medical records for current and incoming students is an ongoing process to assure compliance with physical, immunization and dental exam requirements.
5. Maintains accurate medical records to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions.
6. Manages school health records in accordance with Illinois School Student Records Act, providing efficient retrieval of information and other related archival responsibilities.
7. Provides professional nursing services, first aid, illness and emergency care to students and staff. Confers with and assists the supervising RN in collecting data regarding nursing assessment, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentation.
8. Ability to remain calm in select situations.
9. Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by physician.
10. Assists in developing a medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school.
11. Performs head lice checks and assists with the treatment as needed.
12. Participates in screenings prior to placement in educational programs for
ages 3-21.
13. Identify and create a list of students who have a serious health risk (e.g., allergies, asthma) at registration and ongoing throughout the school year. This information is then given to the principal(s) for distribution to necessary staff members including coaches and supervisory personnel.
14. Consults with school office staff in developing & implementing procedures for dispensing medication.
15. Identifies and creates a list of students who are to take medication at school. This list is to be given to the administration and other required parties.
16. Communicates with principal(s)/office staff about unique circumstances related to student illness or injury.
17. Communicates with physicians offices on matters related to treatment of student illness, injury, and medications.
18. Initiates contact with and acts as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies and private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
19. Participates in - home visits with another member of the school staff as assigned by the principal. (e.g., truancy)
20. Reports communicable diseases to the public health department.
21. In cooperation with the supervising RN provides in-services and coordinates health related medical programs for the staff. This includes such programs as Hepatitis B shots, flu shots, bloodborne pathogens education, and blood pressure screening.
22. Participates in providing health related classroom instruction.
23. Orders medical/first aid supplies for offices and emergency medical kits.
24. Other duties as assigned by the superintendent and/or building principal, supervising RN.
25. Attains prior approval from the principal(s) of all correspondence being sent to the parents.
26. Demonstrates an awareness of and assumes self responsibility for nursing practice which falls within the prescribed scope of practice for RNs as defined in this states Nurse Practice Act.
27. Seeks guidance and validation of knowledge base, skill level, and decision making as necessary, especially in areas of question.
28. Assumes responsibility for personal growth and development and maintains and increases professional knowledge and practice skills through attendance and participation in continuing education and in service classes.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Visual acuity to observe student/school assessment data and use manual/electronic documentation tools.
2. Auditory acuity to hear student/school personnel verbal communication and gather data using auscultatory skills.
3. Manual dexterity of hands and feet to ambulate 8-12 hours per day and skillfully manage multiple pieces of equipment.
4. Physical strength to perform CPR, lift/push/pull 60 pounds with assistance as often as 20 times per 8-10 hour day and perform constant walking, twisting, turning, and stretching maneuvers in giving care and use of equipment.
5. Physical strength to perform the following lifting tasks:
Floor to waist - 40 pounds
14 to waist - 50 pounds
Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds
Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds
Carry 40 pounds for 30 feet
Push 40 pounds/force for 30 feet
Pull 40 pounds/force for 10 feet
6. Keen mental faculties to perform assessment and decision making skills in the management of acutely ill students/school personnel.
7. Communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone.
8. Emotional stability conducive to dealing with a high stress level for 8-10 hours at a time associated with caring for acutely and chronically ill students fast paced physical activity, rapidly changing patient conditions, emotional demands of maintaining effective working relationships with peers, physicians, principals, school staff, and regulatory personnel.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports to the GAHHS School Nurse Supervisor.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. Current Illinois licensure to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
2. Graduation from an approved RN program.
3. Appropriate nursing practice/experience.
4. Must be a licensed driver with an automobile.

Category I Maximal Risk this job exposes you to potential blood, body fluids and tissues on a routine basis. It is recommended that you get the Hepatitis B Vaccine.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Works in school facility office areas/environment where there are few discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise and the like.
2. Works with students/school personnel and may be exposed to contagious diseases or infectious materials, but potential for personal harm and injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions and equipment are used.
