Job Summary
Gibson Island Boat Works in Anne Arundel County seeks an Advanced Marine Technician to inspect, maintain, and repair a variety of boats. Responsible for a full range of repair work to include general maintenance, as well as challenging boat overhaul projects. This position will assess, troubleshoot, and resolve multiple boat system failures as well as lead new installation projects. Advanced Marine Technicians comply with standard operating procedures, safety codes, and regulations in performing daily duties and responsibilities. This position assumes both depth and breadth of multiple systems knowledge and can train other Technicians and Yard Hands in diagnosing system failures and in repairing, maintaining, and installing components.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Inspects and examines boat to determine location of problem and extent of issue
- Uses diagnostic equipment to test and repair boat and associated systems
- Evaluates complexity of repair and determines most efficient and effective manner to prep for work assignment
- Identifies required tools and parts to complete project
- Estimates cost and completion timeline
- Installs and tests vessel systems
- Assist Yard Supervisor in communicating with customers regarding status of projects
Qualifications and Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, preferred
- Marine vocational, technical training, or certifications preferred
- Five or more years’ experience as a boat technician performing complex technical repairs, required
- Specialized in multiple boat systems with boat maintenance to include most of the following: electrical, fabrication, mechanical, plumbing, in-board, and/or out-board
- Strong knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in boat repair
- Proper use and maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment
- Strong knowledge of boat terminology
- Commitment to applicable safety requirements, methods, practices, and the proper use of personal protection equipment
- Work in an organized manner, maintaining a neat work space and yard
- Able to manage multiple jobs in differing states of completion
- Open to constructive assessment for professional improvement
- Strong interpersonal skills - able to communicate clearly with employees as well as customers
- Ability to problem solve and find solutions to complex repairs
- Maryland Driver's License in good standing
- 18 years or older
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Able to work on and around boats, in water and on land
- Will be required to work inside and outside in the elements at times during four seasons
- Physical coordination needed; hand dexterity and balance is a must
- Will be required to walk, stand, bend, climb, crawl, kneel, reach, and work in small spaces at times
- Subject to noise, dust, chemicals, and odors at times
- Able to climb ladders and work on scaffolding as needed
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Able to handle electric tools while working, such as a sander, grinder, reciprocating saw, large hand-held buffer, etc. . .
- Able to proficiently use power equipment such as power washers, drills, saws, etc…
- General Work Schedule: M-F, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
