General Description:
The Special Care Unit Monitor Technician is responsible for cardiac rhythm monitoring, Meditech order entry, and limited patient care duties. S/he interprets reports rhythm changes to nursing staff, maintains equipment, and performs various clerical duties such as answering phones and stocking supplies. Vital signs acquisition and monitoring, reports abnormal findings to the nurse.
Essential Functions:
- Monitors, interprets, and posts cardiac strips.
- Alerts provider and nurse of any abnormal parameters, including vital signs.
- Assists with transfer of patients, as needed.
- Performs basic emergency medical care or first aid, as necessary.
- Reviews charts and orders.
- Communicates effectively to MDs, RNs, Techs, patients and their families.
- Exhibits accuracy in entries to SCU and Telemetry log books.
- Answers call lights when RN is not available.
- Assists RN with basic patient care.
- Answers the telephone.
- Cleans and stocks rooms.
- Maintains the telemetry units, properly applies the telemetry unit on the patient, runs the admission strip for all patients being monitored, runs a telemetry strip for all rhythm changes, and runs a rhythm strip every four hours. Assures they are placed in the patient’s charts.
- Enters orders for new patient admissions and daily orders if the RN is unable to do so.
- Monitors ER cardiac rhythms as needed
Education & Training Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must possess one of the following qualifications: a New Mexico CNA certification, a New Mexico EMS Intermediate License, completion of Level I and II courses from an accredited nursing college, or two years of experience as a Medical Assistant.
- BLS (AHA)
- Basic ECG rhythm recognition within 3 months of hire
- PEARS (AHA) within 6 months from hire date
- Previous monitor tech experience preferred
