The Heavy Equipment Operator performs skilled work in the operation of heavy-duty equipment effectively and safely; and is responsible for maintenance, repairs and adjustments to highly specialized costly equipment requiring constant attention to protect from damage.

· Operate a variety of equipment, which may include backhoes, motor graders, dump trucks, tractor, water trucks, stripers, loaders, blades, scrapers, bulldozers, etc.

· Operate a truck trailer with lowboy unit attached for transporting heavy equipment.

· Perform minor maintenance and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.

· Notify supervisory personnel for need of regular, preventative, or emergency maintenance of all heavy equipment.

· Perform duties under varied field conditions.

· May be required to work varied hours depending on work schedules, seasonal schedule, emergencies, etc.

· Perform other related duties as assigned.

· Knowledge of the operation of hydraulically operated equipment.

· Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions of heavy equipment operation.

· Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved with equipment operation.

· Skill in the operation of various types of heavy trucks and equipment.

· Ability to work independently.

· Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

· Ability to coordinate eye-hand–foot movements.

· Ability to service, adjust and make minor repairs to heavy construction equipment.

· Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the public.

· Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.

High School diploma or GED with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the operation and general maintenance of heavy equipment.

· Class A Commercial Driver’s License.

· Required to obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Valid state driver’s license with a currentproof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application.
