Position Title: Middle School Physical Education Teacher FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Building Principal
POSITION PURPOSE
The position is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters, promotes, and develops an understanding of the relationship between healthy body function and exercise; that motivates each student to cultivate physical fitness and appropriate social and emotional development; that discovers and develops talents of students in physical achievement; and that develops strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student’s ability.
QUALIFICATIONS
Requires the following minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
Current Iowa Teaching License with the appropriate endorsement code for the subject area.
Knowledge of the subject, curriculum, and effective teaching methods.
Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communications.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
Health certification or willingness to get it based on position requirements
Coaching Authorization or equivalent (or willingness to obtain).
Recent experience in K-12 General Education (experience should be within the past three years to be considered recent).
Demonstrated experience leading and participating in problem-solving teams responsible for collaboratively designing academic and behavioral interventions.
Demonstrated experience developing Common Formative Assessments within a professional learning community, creating and analyzing reports, and making instructional changes based on individual students’ needs.
Demonstrated experience working with ELP, ELL, and Special Education teachers.
Provides evidence supporting vertical teaming and understanding students’ prerequisite skills necessary for the currently assigned grade level.
Demonstrated experience and success in teaching students with advanced skills.
Demonstrated ability to utilize technology as an instructional tool.
Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with colleagues characterized by mutual support and cooperation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaches knowledge and skills in health education, physical fitness, and dual or team sports
Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning and implementing a balanced physical education and health program.
Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
Knowledge of personal wellness and social-emotional health
Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials for physical education and health
Individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
Evaluates academic and social growth of students, provide timely and accurate grades for students, and keep appropriate records to include attendance reports, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.
Maintains storage and use of school property.
Provides supervision to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
Evaluates each student’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL EFFORT
Continuous speaking, hearing, and visual effort. Frequent walking, sitting, standing, and reaching. A high degree of concentration requires continuous and often intense mental and visual attention. Numerous irregularities and complicated and complex tasks are involved. Mobility required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is primarily performed in a classroom setting, and may include working with students in other settings. Occasionally exposed to dust, noise, odors, and other irritants. Stress associated with work pace and pressure. Work involves regular hours and days as set forth by the Board-approved calendar. Some travel may be required. Exposed to hazards of the road when traveling.
