School Nurse

Position Title: School Nurse- Registered Nurse FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Building Principal Status: Part Time -Salary

Specifications/Qualifications:

• Current State of Iowa Registered Nurse License

• Updated Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification. (Certified CPR Instructor Preferred).

• Prefer at least 2 years of clinical or hospital experience.

Basic Function: The school nurse promotes health and safety in the school environment to achieve optimal academic success and life-long achievement of students. The school nurse will address actual and potential health problems, provide case management services, and collaborate with staff and families to encourage self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

Essential Functions:

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Obtaining & Reviewing Immunization Records, Vision and Dental Screenings, and coordination of these screenings

• Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters.

• Write IHP and 504s and educate staff on the contents

• Be responsive, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.

• Advise on the modification of the educational program to meet the health needs of individual students.

• Advise on the exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infections and contagious diseases.

• Advise teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health problems.

• Assist school personnel in monitoring the school environment for student safety.

• Attend committee meetings and conferences regarding health services and health curriculum.

• Collaborate with staff in the continuing development and implementation of a Wellness Program.

• Obtain certification as a CPR instructor and help teach First Aid/CPR to faculty and students.

• Assist with the health education program concerning developmental needs for K-5th grade students.

• Assist with the kindergarten round-up program on health issues and immunization requirements.

• Dispense student medications. Train staff on appropriate management and dispensing of medication when the nurse is unavailable.

• Act as liaison with helping agencies such as the Department of Human Services, etc. when assigned to do so.

• Assist other school personnel in identifying the social, emotional, and physical needs of school children.

• Delegation to Health Associates functioning under RN license

• Assist in programs for the care of disabled children and diverse learners. Participate in AEA meetings for evaluation of student's IEP and IHP.

• Reviewing current HHS, IBON, DOE, and CDC Guidelines for Practice

Clerical Responsibilities:

• Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students to include mandatory immunization certificates.

• Assume primary responsibility for maintaining an appropriate inventory of medical aid supplies in the school.

• Coordinate the recordkeeping and submission of records for Medicaid reimbursement.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL EFFORT

Continuous sitting, speaking, hearing, and visual effort. Frequent standing, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and repetitive hand movements. Occasional climbing, lifting, and the ability to handle/move heavy or awkward packages delivered to the office area, not to exceed 40 pounds. Close mental and visual attention. Fine motor skills and fine manipulation abilities are necessary. Work involves numerous irregularities including complicated, complex, repetitive, and varied tasks. Continuous general concentration is necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Occasional exposure to dust, noise, odors, and other irritants. Stress associated with work pace and pressure. Work with frequent interruptions and distractions. May be exposed to germs and viruses as a part of working with students.
