Qualifications/Job Description:

The Gilpin County School District RE-1 (GCSD) Facilities Services seeks a Custodian. This position assists and supports building and grounds maintenance and has custodial duties for the facility for the school and afterschool event needs.

The position is full-time Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 12 p.m. or Monday through Thursday from 2 p.m. to 12 p.m. GCSD is a four day school week.

Job Summary:

  • Clean the assigned facility interior and exterior grounds area in compliance with all safety, health, and District rules and regulations.
  • Complete the assigned custodial cleaning tasks for each shift.
  • Attend to emergency maintenance and custodial needs during the shift.
  • Support the facility use by external individuals, groups, or organizations who rent the facility and

grounds or internal personnel for extracurricular school activity events. Provide custodial services and building security personnel for the event as warranted. Collaborate with internal and external individuals and participants to support the event.

  • Monitors safety and security of building and grounds and secures open and unlocked doors and windows.
  • Remove exterior snow and ice at entrances and sidewalks. Mop hazardous wet interior floors during inclement weather.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

D 15% Sanitize bathrooms. Restock bathroom supplies.

D 15% Clean tables, benches, chairs, and desks

D 10% Vacuum and clean carpets.

D 10% Clean and maintain tiled floors.

D 10% Dust and sanitize all room surfaces.

D 10% Collect and dispose of trash.

D 10% Maintain/deep clean carpet, furniture, and other school hardware.

D 5% Perform minor maintenance on building and custodial equipment.

D 5% Clean all glass surfaces.

D 3% Clean whiteboards.

A 2% Remove snow and ice from exterior entrances.

Ongoing 5% Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING High school diploma or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE 0 – 2 years experience in custodial and maintenance work.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT Basic math, writing, and communication skills. Technical knowledge concerning maintenance and custodial topics including standard methods, materials, tools, and safety practices. Ability to operate and maintain all types of custodial equipment, hand tools, and snow removal equipment. Basic knowledge of health and safety codes, custodial chemicals, and OSHA requirements.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS Valid Colorado driver’s license preferred.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing own work; addressing complaints and resolving problems. This position acts as a technical resource to sweepers regarding the proper methods, equipment, and materials used in their assignments.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING Work is assigned by the Facilities Manager. This position requires independent judgment to prioritize, analyze, and apply solutions to various maintenance, custodial, and repair problems. Additionally, this position requires independent judgment to plan, organize, schedule, and perform the set-up for a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Decision making requires collaboration with other custodial staff, school administration, school staff, and other Support Services personnel. Supervisor will assign work and be involved in decision making.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS High exposure to self to bruises due to power equipment. Medium exposure to self and others to the following: cuts due to scrapers and hand tools; chemical burns due to cleaning solutions, acids, and bleach; fractures due to slips and falls; and repetitive motion stress due to mopping, sweeping, and scrubbing. Low exposure to self and others to the following: hernia due to lifting heavy objects; disease due to cleaning bodily fluids; and loss of sight due to acids, bleach, and cleaning solutions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS Frequently required to communicate and use interpersonal skills. Occasionally required to compare, analyze, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, evaluate, compile and negotiate.

Job Requirements:

  • Hands-on knowledge and experience in the safe operation of a variety of maintenance and custodial tools, machinery, and power equipment.
  • Self-directed worker who has the ability to multitask, prioritize, problem-solve, and efficiently complete all activities.
  • Effective communicator with skills, both oral and written, to interact/communicate with all types of members of the school community including students, parents, staff, and patrons.
  • Meets all physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 75 pounds; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; reaching above shoulder level; fine finger dexterity.
  • Move, set-up, and climb ladders to a height of 25 feet.
  • Ability to withstand a variety of indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.

Salary and Benefits Information:

  • Based on Classified Salary Schedule. Hourly, at will position range $20.02 to $25.27 an hour depending on experience in a similar position.
  • District contribution of $8,136 annually toward employee health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • District contribution of 21.40% of annual salary on behalf of employee to the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA).
  • Twelve days District-paid annual.
  • Two weeks District-paid vacation after one year of employment for 40 hour a week/12 month employees.

Employment Period:

260 days for 5 days a week and 208 days for 4 days a week per year for 40 hour a week employees
