What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sergeant position at Gilpin County?
Under daily supervision, performs general law enforcement work to enforce the laws; Local, State and Federal-and to safeguard the lives, property and rights of the residents of Gilpin County.
Supervised by: Division Chief - Detentions
Supervises: Community Service Officers, Deputies, and Corporals
FLSA status: Non-Exempt
Starting Rate: $46.15/hr.
Step Plan: $45.15/hr. - $65.64/hr.
Main Job Duties:
* Supervises the daily operation of the detention facility to include:
o Booking and releasing of inmates, including housing assignments.
o Inmate activities, including supervising the distribution of meals, commissary, exchange, medications and any other inmate program,
o Oversees inmate extraditions and transportation across the United States and follows up with the status of all transports.
* Attends to additional areas of detention facility, maintaining security and control of inmates and jail. Prevents inmate violence, breaking up fights and subduing combative inmates, as necessary. Performs crisis and suicide intervention as needed. Reviews incidents from previous shift. Conducts cell
searches for contraband, as required.
* Finds supervision for inmates on work assignments outside of detention facility.
* Supervises and maintains the integrity of authorized access to the Gilpin County Detention Facility as appropriate.
* Provides backup support for Patrol Deputies and Dispatch as necessary.
* Communicates with inmates, giving information and directions, mediating disputes and advising of rights and processes. Listens to and investigates inmates' complaints and resolves inmates' conflicts and problems.
* Supervises and trains staff. Assists with employee hiring process and disciplinary actions when needed. Assigns, guides, trains, develops and coaches employees in the accomplishment of their duties and professional goals ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures and standards.
* Supervises and operates a central control center to include; panel and monitors, security cameras and television monitors to view areas of detention facility, as assigned. Performs visual and audio surveillance of doors and activities of inmates and staff. Receives inquiries and provides information as
requested. Responds to fire alarms and panic alarms, determining the location of the incident and getting the assistance to that area.
* Supervises and schedules transports or escorts of inmates within the detention facility and between criminal justice, medical, dental, and other public and governmental facilities.
* Maintains and supervises the safety and security of County and District courtrooms and maintains security for persons within the court complex.
* Serves assigned court documents and maintains records of disposition.
* Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and various word processing and database programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information on inmates.
* Prepares various logs, forms and reports, documenting movement and activities of inmates, grievance allegations, incidents of violation of rules, notable behavior, potential safety hazards, problems with facility hardware, criminal activity, summons, etc.
* Attends seminars, classes lectures, etc., as appropriate, to enhance and maintain knowledge or trends and developments in the field of law enforcement.
* Takes persons into custody on arrest warrants and makes arrests based on probable cause.
Additional Job Duties:
* Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the Division Chief or Undersheriff and any duties needed to stabilize an emergency situation.
* Maintains cleanliness of assigned workstation, uniform and weapon.
* Provides basic medical attention in emergencies, including CPR, as required.
* Maintains office proficiency standards in the use of firearms.
Specialized Job Duties:
The following job duties are assigned to a specific Sergeant in the Detentions Division and each individual Sergeant will be evaluated on the duties that they are assigned.
* Maintains employee-training records, including the Field Training Program, for the Detention Division; updates the training manuals as necessary.
* Maintains records for transporting inmates and generates documentation for TAC.
* Maintains records for the work release program to include contracts, forms and projecting release dates.
* Maintains trusty work programs to include contracts, hiring and outdates.
* Oversees and conducts background checks as needed.
* Represents the Sheriff's Office during recruiting assignments and obtains applications from qualified candidates.
* Manages the inmate phone system and places orders for supplies.
Hours:
* Must be available for shift work, to include weekends and holidays. Must be able to respond on call-outs or to any detention center incident when called upon and provide supervision for all shifts.
Qualifications:
* Education: High School graduate or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and training that would provide the required knowledge and skills to perform the job,
* Must be a minimum of 2l years of age.
* Meets standards set forth in the Colorado Revised Statues.
* Knowledge of Colorado and federal criminal law, constitutional criminal procedure and criminal investigations.
* Ability to:
(a) Work well with others and maintains a professional relationship with supervisors, subordinates, outside law enforcement personnel and the public.
(c) Follow complex instructions.
(d) Accurately and effectively transmit and receive information that is necessary to the accomplishment of goals and objectives, including effective written and oral communications in English; and the ability to listen.
* Must not have any felony convictions or misdemeanors designated by POST, any significant prior criminal activity, and must pass department background check.
* Must pass background check, including traffic and criminal.
Certifications:
* Is a Colorado Certified Peace Officer, or has all requirements necessary for, and nothing that would prevent, such certification within 30 days of employment, from an approved Colorado POST Academy.
* Must have a valid Colorado Driver's License without any restriction due to driving record. Must also be able to drive a county vehicle.
* CPR & First Aid certification within 90 days of employment.
* Must possess FEMA ICS100 and 700 certifications within 6 months of employment.
* Obtain OSN within 6 months of request to CBI.
* Range Certified.
* Taser Certification

Experience:
* Previous supervisory experience preferred.
* Must have two years law enforcement experience as a Certified Colorado Peace Officer by POST standard
