Education and Experience:
- Any combination equivalent to experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities to accurately translate and interpret both written and orally from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
- Fluent Speaker in English and Spanish
- Associate of Arts Degree or 48 lower division college semester units.
Description of Basic Functions and Responsibilities: Under the direction of assigned administrator, the district translator provides accurate, concise, grammatically and idiomatically correct translation and interpretation services for the District office and school sites. Attends parent meetings, hearings, conferences and other district-sponsored events throughout the district.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Speak, read and write English and Spanish fluently
- Maintain confidentiality pertaining to all district matters
- Communicate effectively and professionally in oral and written form
- Acquisition of specialized terminology related to education, health, housing, mental health and California law
- Interpret for staff and parents by phone, at meetings, conferences, recruitment and enrollment events, home visits, workshops, trainings and other district-sponsored events
- Translation of district documents including Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), legal materials, bulletins, correspondence, and any other materials assigned
- Establish positive working relationships with all district personnel
- Perform assignment/required tasks without close supervision
- Use of specialized software program for IEPs and any required District, State and Federal documents
- Assist with the administration of tests
- Participate in staff development opportunities
- Edit and proofread documents to accurately reflect regional differences in language
Working Conditions:
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computer equipment to type letters, reports and other materials; bending; and sitting for extended periods of time necessary to operate computer equipment and enter information
- Moderate to high stress level
