About the Position

This is an on-site role for a Nursery / Preschool Assistant Teacher at GIRAFAS, available as either Part-time (25 hours / week) or Full-time (40 hours / week). We are seeking energetic, caring, and creative individuals fluent in Portuguese to join our dedicated team. As an Assistant Teacher, you will play a key role in supporting the lead teacher, assisting with daily classroom activities, providing effective communication, and fostering a nurturing environment where young children can learn, grow, and thrive. Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements :

  • Fluency in Portuguese  (required).
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.  (required).
  • Proficiency in English (preferred but not required).
  • Educational Requirements :  Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or relevant field; or enrollment in an accredited ECE program or related field (required).
  • Minimum of  2 years of experience working with children  (required), with at least 1 year in a nursery or preschool setting (preferred).
  • Knowledge of Montessori principles is a plus.
  • Ability to pass a background check, fingerprinting, and complete a current medical exam.
  • Willingness to obtain or maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and multitasking skills, with the ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities.
  • A collaborative, team-oriented approach to working with staff, children, and families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the planning and implementation of the Montessori-based curriculum for children ages 10 months to 36 months; or 3 to 6 years.
  • Supporting classroom activities, preparing teacher-made materials, and collaborating with lead teachers on year-round themes.
  • Encouraging positive behavior using effective discipline strategies and fostering an inclusive classroom environment.
  • Supervising children at all times, ensuring their safety, and stepping in as a substitute teacher when needed.
  • Assisting with daily routines, including feeding, brushing teeth, diapering, and toileting.
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment by sterilizing equipment and ensuring materials are properly stored.
  • Keeping records, conducting child assessments, and participating in parent conferences.
  • Participating in special events, open houses, and school fundraisers.
  • Committing to ongoing professional development, including obtaining Montessori certification (supported by GIRAFAS).
