Job Duties : Assist in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by performing bio analytical laboratory tests following established pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical standards and practices. Obtain and process specimens for quality patient testing, using specialized scientific technical knowledge. Perform testing of quality control materials in conjunction with patient samples as specified in department-specific policies. Document quality control as specified. Report and document all critical results immediately to the appropriate caregiver. Responsible for all patient draws and testing with the early morning draws being the most important so the physicians have them available for their morning rounds. Process specimens for reference laboratory and pathology services. Critically evaluate specimens and correlate lab results to the clinical picture of each individual patient, including preparing the patient for lab testing, accurately labeling, handling, preserving, processing, transporting, and storing specimens. Monitor tests, quality control, and procedures to ensure accuracy of lab tests. Perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological tests, including microscopic examinations of bodily fluids such as blood, urine, spinal fluid, to identify abnormalities. Make cultures of body fluid and tissue samples, to determine the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites, or other microorganisms. Use laboratory equipment to locate microorganisms. Collect and study blood samples to determine compatibility for blood transfusions. Provide Blood Banking services as ordered by the physician. Investigate all possible suspected transfusion reactions and report results immediately to pathologist and physician to ensure appropriate follow-up treatment of patient. Carefully collect and accurately label specimens to ensure the highest quality of results. Analyze samples for chemical content or a chemical reaction and determine concentrations of compounds such as blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Prior to sharing results with medical practitioners, evaluate test results, analyze laboratory findings, develop and modify procedures, and establish and monitor programs to ensure the accuracy of tests and results. Prepare samples for analysis and for tests by cultivating, isolating, and identifying microorganisms for analysis. Evaluate test methods and instrumentation. Operate, calibrate, conduct performance checks and troubleshooting, including performing preventative maintenance of clinical lab instruments and equipment with appropriate documentation. Minimum Education Requirement : Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field or foreign equivalent. ASCP Certification required.
