Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate School Nurse to join our educational team. The School Nurse will play a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of students by providing direct care, health education, and support to ensure a safe and healthy school environment. This position requires a strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and infectious disease care, as well as the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
Job Summary: Administers a comprehensive health service program designed to help students achieve maximum benefit from the district’s educational programs and services.
Essential Functions:
· Establish and maintain a comprehensive school health program, following guidelines of the Pennsylvania School Code, the Division of School Health Regulations and school district policy.
· Supply parents/guardians with forms for physical and dental examinations and encourage them to have these examinations performed by their family physician and dentist. School Dental and Physical examinations may be performed with parent/guardian permission.
· Conduct and/or oversee mandated screenings and completes referrals and follow-up where applicable (i.e., auditory, vision, height/weight, BMI, physicals, dentals, scoliosis immunization.
· Maintain comprehensive, confidential health records for each student including a log for every student contact and parental communication.
· Use the information from health assessment techniques to identify health problems and make appropriate referrals with necessary follow-up.
· Administer first aid as needed in accordance with approved duties and training.
· Managing and keeping inventory of health-related supplies and equipment.
· Establish an effective system for emergency care and assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of ill or injured students and staff.
· Contact the student’s parent/guardian when an emergency occurs with a child in school.
· Maintain complete records on school accidents requiring medical referral, forward copies of accidents to the Business Manager, and follow-up on accident cases.
· Act as the liaison between community health services and families.
· Manage and control acute and chronic disease. Carry out policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases in collaboration with the PA Department of Health.
· Provides health teaching and counseling to parent/guardians with appropriate information to promote, maintain, or restore health and prevent illness and injury.
· Inform teachers of health conditions of students which may affect behavior, appearance or scholastic performance. Work with other team members to establish plans for students with special health care needs and update them as needed. This may include adaptations for classes when corrective health measures are warranted.
· Remain alert to potential child abuse and evaluate and report as dictated by district guidelines.
· Administer medications and perform procedures according to physician’s orders and school district policies and procedures.
· Develops procedures to ensure that all medicines are stored safely. Regularly reevaluates district procedures for dispensing medications.
· Provide current health related information for school personnel.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
· Performs in accordance with school policy, administrative regulations, state and federal laws.
