Counselor-in-Training (CIT)
Position Description
The Counselor-in-Training will assist Activity Specialists, Kitchen Staff, and Unit Staff in the coordination and care of campers and daily camp life.
They act in accordance with the New York Department of Health (NYDOH), Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), and the American Camp Association (ACA) standards, and demonstrate the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp. NOTE: This position is only available to current or previous participants in the Counselor-in-Training program at the Girl Scouts of Greater New York.
Responsibilities
- Assist activity specialists and unit staff with implementing activities that align with the weekly session theme and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
- Lead and support campers from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds in daily camp activities and in emergency situations.
- Plan, develop, and implement camp-wide Evening Programs suitable for all campers, including a weekly badgework showcase.
- Lead songs, games, and activities to meet the needs and interests of campers.
- Complete camp-wide Kapers, including activity area/dining hall housekeeping (e.g., cleaning, sweeping, mopping), kitchen duty (e.g., food prep, food serving, cleaning), and flag ceremony support.
- Arrive on time and in uniform to activity area, unit shelter, Girl HQ, or other assigned location in accordance with your daily schedule.
- Assist in the maintenance and care of all activity and unit supplies.
- Immediately report to the Camp Leadership Team concerning observations, incidents or accidents, including camper conflicts and behavior concerns.
- Enthusiastically participate in all aspects of camp, including staff training, structured and unstructured activities, position-specific in-service training, team building, and debriefing.
- Demonstrate quick thinking, excellent communication, sound problem-solving techniques, and the ability to work as a team player.
- Comply with all policies communicated in staff training and the staff manual.
- Set a good example for campers and other staff members regarding cleanliness, punctuality, mutual respect, appropriate language, and appropriate attire.
- Abide by the mission and values of the Girl Scouts.
- Provide excellent customer service to campers, camp visitors, and other staff.
- Perform other tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Camp Leadership Team.
Minimum Qualifications
- Be at least 16 years old by July 1, 2025.
- Previous or current participant of the Counselor-in-Training program at the Girl Scouts of Greater New York.
- Able to provide a physical exam from a licensed doctor that occurred after September 2024.
- Desire and ability to work with and relate to campers and staff from diverse backgrounds in an outdoor environment.
- The acceptance and understanding that employment is at a sleepaway (overnight) camp and that work hours are long and irregular.
- Possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant camper engagement and supervision daily throughout the summer.
- Patience, sense of humor, integrity, and an ability to adapt well to changing situations.Ability to accept guidance, performance feedback, and supervision.
- Clearance through the Sex Offender Registry and Criminal Background Check.
- Willingness to prioritize the needs of Girl Scouts of Greater New York and Camp Kaufmann.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior camp experience and/or interest in the outdoors.
- Dates of Summer 2025 Employment
- Must live on site and be available to work the ENTIRE duration of:
- Staff training: June 29 – July 4. Additional certification classes may be required.
- Summer camp programming (5 sessions): July 6 – August 8.
- Time off: Friday afternoon to Sunday morning weekly.

- Good health and the stamina necessary to work in a camp setting.
- Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while leading programming.
- Bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing may all be a part of daily tasks.
Compensation
- $50 per diem.
- Room and board while at camp.
- Travel to/from NYC weekly via charter bus; must wear CIT uniform on the bus.
