Position Description
Counselors assist in facilitating camp activities in accordance with the ACA (American Camp Association), NYSDOH (New York State Department of Health), and GSUSA (Girl Scouts of the USA) standards and designed to help campers understand and develop an appreciation for the outdoors. They are responsible for fostering a safe and healthy environment for campers while demonstrating a passion for the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.

 

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the health and safety of campers.
  • Assist with the planning, supply gathering, and implementation of activities and programs that meet the needs and interests of campers.
  • Lead high-quality programming using the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
  • Teach specialized Outdoor Classrooms focused on various skill areas such as climbing, challenge courses, archery, survival skills, or ecology (training is provided).
  • Support the Nature Acclimation Process by introducing campers to the outdoors safely and respectfully.
  • Occasionally stay overnight in a unit with campers, helping them learn to care for and respect themselves and others.
  • Lead and/or participate in structured and unstructured activities.
  • Apply behavior management techniques to mediate conflicts between children.
  • Assist in maintaining housekeeping and care of unit supplies and program areas.
  • Provide basic first aid and maintain unit or program area first aid kits.
  • Immediately report concerning observations, incidents, or accidents and assist in preparing reports as required.
  • Demonstrate sound problem-solving techniques and the ability to work as a team player.
  • Assist campers in daily tasks as well as emergency situations.
  • Comply with all personnel policies communicated in staff training and staff manual.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff regarding cleanliness, punctuality, manners, respect, appropriate language, attire, etc.
  • Subscribe to the mission and values of the Girl Scouts by becoming a member.
  • Provide excellent customer service to other staff members, campers, caregivers, and other visitors to camp.
  • Accept other tasks and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum age: 18
  • High School diploma or the equivalent.
  • Willingness to abide by the policies and practices of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York.
  • Desire and ability to work with and relate to children and peers in an outdoor environment.
  • Clearance through the Sex Offender Registry and Criminal Background Check.
  • Current certification in Responding to Emergencies, First Aid, CPR, and AED or willingness to complete a certification course.
  • Current certification as a Mandated Reporter or willingness to complete the online course.
  • Willingness to prioritize the needs of Girl Scouts and Camp Kaufmann.
  • The acceptance and understanding that employment is at an overnight camp and that work hours are irregular.
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision.
  • Ability to accept guidance, performance feedback, and supervision.
  • Accept and follow directions both in verbal and written form.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior camp experience and/or interest in the outdoors.
  • Experience working with children preferred.

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Good health and the stamina necessary to work in a camp setting.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while leading programming.

 

Required

  • Work at camp a minimum of 1 weekend/month

 

Compensation

  • $90 - $100 per diem rate range (based on experience and certifications).
  • Train ticket reimbursement/transportation costs to and from NYC.
  • Room and board while at camp.
