What are the responsibilities and job description for the Expedition Trip Lead position at Girl Scouts Heart Of Central California?
This position pays $16.50 per hour when working remotely and $122 per day while working at camp.
The Expedition Trip Leader coordinates and leads expedition logistics including, but not limited to, trip itineraries, trip reports, risk management, teaching various outdoor skills, vehicle and gear maintenance, and decision making. This position works in conjunction with the Outdoor/Camp and the Learning & Development team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Design and deliver high-quality programs for girls using assessment, independent judgement and discretion, while adhering to an approved budget and ensuring all programs are following GSUSA and GSHCC Safety Activity Checkpoints, county, federal, and state policies.
Assist with preparation for expedition camps, including but not limited to, training, arranging logistics, purchasing food and supplies, gear management, etc.
Assist with daily operation of expedition camps including food, program, business administration, participant supervision, health care and safety, risk management, photo management, and vehicle and gear maintenance.
Collaborate with camp and council leadership on matters of conflict resolution and customer satisfaction as needed.
Be a role model for campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
Program
Understand and promote Leave No Trace principles and the four Girl Scout Outdoor Outcomes.
Evaluate the success of the programming offered to participants and offer feedback and suggestions to the Manager as needed.
2. Ensure that fellow staff and campers know and follow safety and programming procedures
Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures as outlined by the Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints, American Camp Association (ACA) standards, and any state codes, regarding Outdoor Education are being followed.
Be a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior.
Provide staff coverage and facilitate camper evaluations.
3. Assist in the management and care of the physical equipment and facilities
Conduct daily checks of location and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and any necessary repairs; report any maintenance or equipment needs to the Learning and Development Specialist.
Other Job Duties:
Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned.
Participate in pre-camp staff training as applicable.
Assist with the organization and support of the group/trip assigned, providing camper supervision and participating as a positive role model.
Assist in cleaning and maintenance of supplies, vehicles, and locations during pre-camp training, on trips, and post trips.
Perform other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum age of 21 years.
At least 3 years of experience in a related field, delivering outdoor programs, youth programs preferred (Trip Log or Outdoor Experience Inventory desired).
Bachelor’s Degree or pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in a related field preferred; preferred early childhood education, recreation management or nonprofit management. Two years of college desired.
Must be comfortable in the following outdoor skills: fire building, backpacking, camping, outdoor cooking, knife safety, and knots.
Valid driver’s license with clean driving record and a minimum of five years of driving experience.
Experience with basic vehicle maintenance.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred.
Must have a high level of interpersonal and customer service skills, confidently presents to large groups of people, facilitates effective two-way communication, fosters and maintains positive relationships.
Self-starter with the ability to manage a budget and evaluate program aspects.
Possess a can-do attitude with the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work, maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail, and adapt quickly to varied conditions.

Maintain relevant certifications, including but not limited to: Wilderness First Aid, CPR, and Lifeguard Certification.
Necessary trainings and certifications can be provided to qualified candidate after hire.
Once certified, the employee must maintain current basic and instructor level certifications for the courses they have been hired to instruct.

Ability to remain active and on your feet throughout the day
Activities could include: daily hiking, canoeing, surfing, paddling, sailing, rock climbing, and caving.
OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS
We are a Girl Scout camp. We expect this position to work collaboratively and closely with Girl Scouts for the greater part of the role. Some physical requirements of this position could be endurance including standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires the ability to listen to others, observe others’ actions, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals, and physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and other environmental conditions.
While performing the essential duties/responsibilities of this job, the employee lives for up to 12 weeks in close proximity to others, including sharing living quarters, restrooms, laundry facilities and a common staff lounge. May only use personal electronics (such as computers, phones and other devices) only during personal designated breaks and out of sight of campers. Multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment is an integral part of this position, as is the ability to work with high-stress situations based on the nature of GSHCC mission and daily work.
