Description

This position pays $16.50 hourly while working remotely and $100 daily while working at camp.

The Outdoor Skills Lead thoughtfully develops and delivers outdoor skills and survival workshops that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Under the supervision of the Activity Manager, they will also create programming that reflects the camps commitment to stewardship of the natural environment and maintains cleanliness of the nature building and its associated equipment. They will ensure all activities planned follow Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints and American Camp Association (ACA) standards.   

1. Program

  • Develop and delivers an environmental, outdoor skills and survival program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers and utilizes programming styles to meet camper needs
  • Understand and promote Leave No Trace principles and the four Girl Scout Outdoor Outcomes
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on outdoor skills and Girl Scout programming for all ages
  • Facilitate all outdoor skills activities, including camper progression of skills, reward and recognition programs
  • Evaluate the success of the nature and outdoor skills programming at camp and offer feedback and suggestions to the Activity Manager as needed


2.    Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures

  • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures as outlined by the Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints, American Camp Association (ACA) standards, and any state codes, regarding Outdoor Education are being followed
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior
  • Provide staff coverage and facilitate camper evaluations
     

3.    Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the program shed and outdoor education areas utilized 

  • Maintain the program shed, including clear inventory and planning for replacement of supplies in a timely manner
  • Be responsible for observing hazards or enhancements in program shed and utilized program spaces and alerting other appropriate staff
  • Conduct daily check of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair; report any maintenance or equipment needs to Activity Manager as needed
  • Ensure activity areas are properly secured when not in use 

 

Other Job Duties:

  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned
  • Participate in pre-camp staff training, as well as in-service training sessions
  •  Assist with the organization and support of the living unit assigned, providing camper supervision and participating as a positive role model 
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of camp during pre-camp training, after each session and during end-of-season cleaning period
  • Chaperones arriving and departing campers on buses as assigned
  • Assists with the delivery and pickup of camper luggage
  • Perform other job duties as assigned 

Qualifications


  • Minimum age 21, preferred 
  • Experience facilitating outdoor activities or youth programming, required
  • Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record
  • Ability to interact with girls of all ages
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR*, desired (training provided)
  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification, desired
     

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to function independently
  • Highly responsible and trustworthy
  • Training and experience in outdoor programming, as well as prior experience with program development or leadership
  • Some knowledge of natural history, biology, ecology, and related fields
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions
  • Ability to motivate and maintain effective working relationships with staff from diverse cultures and all organizational levels

 

Physical and Intellectual Aspects of the Position

  • Ability to communicate in English and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers

 

OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS

We are a Girl Scout camp. We expect this position to work collaboratively and closely with Girl Scouts for the greater part of the role. Some physical requirements of this position could be endurance including standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires the ability to listen to others, observe others’ actions, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals, and physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and other environmental conditions.

 

While performing the essential duties/responsibilities of this job, the employee lives for up to 12 weeks in close proximity to others, including sharing living quarters, restrooms, laundry facilities and a common staff lounge. May only use personal electronics (such as computers, phones and other devices) only during personal designated breaks and out of sight of campers. Multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment is an integral part of this position, as is the ability to work with high-stress situations based on the nature of GSHCC mission and daily work.
