This position pays $16.50 hourly while working remotely and $100 daily while working at camp.
The STEM & Nature Lead thoughtfully develops and delivers nature, environmental, and STEM based activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities and reflect the camp’s commitment to stewardship of the natural environment. Under the supervision of the Activities Manager, they will ensure all activities planned follow Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints and American Camp Association (ACA) standards and will maintain cleanliness of the nature building and its associated equipment.
1. Program
- Develop and deliver a nature or environmental program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers and utilizes the camp’s natural environment
- Implement a variety of age and ability appropriate activities in a variety of STEM topics such as geology and soils, plant and animal adaptations, wildlife habitat, basic astronomy, water studies, engineering, geometry, animal science, and natural history
- Be the subject matter expert for STEM and Girl Scout programming for all age levels
- Evaluate the success of the STEM program and offer feedback and suggestions to the Activities Manager as needed
2. Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures
- Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures as outlined in GSHCC’s Safety Activity Checkpoint and American Camp Association (ACA) standards
- Be a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior
- Provide staff coverage and facilitate camper evaluations
3. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the nature or environmental program area.
- Maintain the nature hut equipment and supplies, including clear inventory and planning for replacement of supplies in a timely manner
- Be responsible for observing hazards or enhancements in the natural environment and alerting other appropriate staff
- Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair
- Ensure activity areas are properly secured when not in use
Other Job Duties:
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned
- Participate in pre-camp staff training, as well as in-service training sessions
- Assist with the organization of the living unit, providing camper supervision and participating as a positive role model
- Assist in cleaning and maintenance of camp during pre-camp training, after each session and during end-of-season cleaning period
- Chaperone arriving and departing campers on buses as assigned
- Assists with the delivery and pickup of camper luggage
- Perform other job duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum age 21 preferred
- Experience in nature or environmental instruction and youth programming
- Ability to interact with girls of all ages
- Current certification in first aid and CPR, desired (training provided)
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to function independently
- Highly responsible and trustworthy
- Training and experience in teaching nature or environmental studies to children, required
- Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions
- Some knowledge of natural history, biology, ecology, and related fields
- Ability to motivate and maintain effective working relationships with staff from diverse cultures and all organizational levels
Physical and Intellectual Aspects of the Position
- Ability to communicate in English and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques

- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
Some physical requirements of a nature or environmental position could be endurance including standing, walking or hiking, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Verbal communication to groups of campers in an outdoor setting. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to set up equipment and assist campers. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/program. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the environment available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and other environmental conditions.
