Counselor-in-Training Director - Camp Linden

Position Summary/Objective
To further the mission of the camp by serving as the primary mentor and caregiver for campers in the Leader in Training (LIT) and Counselor in Training (CIT) programs as well as Junior Counselors (JC). The CIT director will plan and implement the CIT and LIT curriculum which will equip campers with the skills necessary to become camp counselors and leaders in their communities. Responsible for guiding campers in their personal growth and skill development. Also responsible for assisting with the oversight and training of JCs.
 
Essential Functions

  • Be a role model to campers, CITs, JCs, and staff in your attitude, behavior, and following of camp procedures.
  • Facilitate leadership lesson plans that meet and support camp and camper goals.
  • Set daily and session schedules for leadership camper programs.
  • Deliver creative and adaptive Leader in Training and Counselor in Training I and II programs including educational and skill development programming.
  • Adapt activities as necessary to create a progression based on the needs and experience of the participants.
  • Evaluate CIT performance and readiness to serve as a JC or counselor throughout and at the end of camp by providing positive feedback and areas for development.
  • Provide daily care for each participant within your supervision.
  • Be alert to and assist with campers’, CITs’, and JCs’ physical and mental needs. Discuss with camp health director and/or camp director when appropriate.
  • Supervise participants during both structured and unstructured times.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety for campers, CITs, JCs, and staff at all times.
  • Work with counselors and other staff to ensure CIT and JC success when shadowing or assisting in a unit or activity area.
  • Actively participate in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Apply youth development principles to empower campers, embrace diversity, aid in competency development, and build connections.
  • Assist in the implementation of staff training.
  • Participate as a member of the camp leadership team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, and all other all-camp activities and functions.
  • Assist in the creation of schedules for campers and staff.
  • Take action to keep camp clean and safe, including assisting in camp chores, caring for program materials, and reporting all maintenance issues in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Conduct beginning- and end-of-season equipment/supply inventory.
  • Submit order requests for equipment/supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials.
  • Ensure adherence to safety and risk management guidelines to maintain high standards of health, safety, and supervision for campers, CITs, JCs, and staff at all times.
  • Assist in the responsibilities associated with upholding State of Michigan Licensing and American Camp Association regulations and standards.
  • Assist in evening and overnight camper supervision through conducting bed-checks and sleeping in units as assigned.
  • Responsible for ensuring that daily and weekly functions of camp run in accordance with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) standards.
  • Assist in the development and lead the facilitation of session-long progressive programming tracks. 
  • Facilitate program areas such as arts and crafts, STEM, outdoor skills, and adventure areas.
  • Do what needs to be done so that every camper has a great summer at camp.

Education and Experience
  • 21 years or older preferred
  • Previous experience with children’s camps or working with children preferred.
  • Previous experience supervising staff members.
  • Previous experience creating schedules.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in facilitation and development of teen leadership programs.
  • Previously demonstrated knowledge and skill in camp and outdoor adventure programming, including but not limited to target sports, aquatic activities, camping skills, STEM activities, etc. preferred.
  • Must have belief in (and ability to speak about passionately and with conviction) the mission and values of Girl Scouts, be willing to subscribe to the principles expressed in the Promise and Law, and aware of the needs of youth in our pluralistic society.
  • Current certification in Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED or willingness to obtain.
  • Must become a member of Girl Scouts.
  • Must be able to pass State and National background check.
  • Ability to collaborate with teammates and supervisors and cohabitate effectively in a communal environment.
Work Environment
  • Operates in a professional camp environment and will live on site. This role occasionally uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones. Ability and willingness to work in various activity areas within camp (archery, climbing wall, waterfront, horses, etc) in all types of weather from rain, snow, extreme heat and cold. Must be able to move around the camp property to assist campers in their activities. Will spend majority of hours each day standing and interacting with children.
Work Schedule
  • Position requires flexibility with schedule, typical schedule is Sunday through Friday, though some Saturdays may be required.  
  • Position requires living on site and working evenings
Supervisory Responsibility
This position oversees Leaders-in-Training, Counselors-in-Training, and Junior Counselors and acts as a mentor to Camp Counselors when necessary.
