Position Summary/Objective
To further the mission of camp by providing for the health needs of all campers and staff. This position is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of everyone at camp through administering medications, first aid, and emergency care. The Health Director also conducts daily cleaning checks, creates kaper charts (camp chores), and conducts end of the week cleaning checks of all units.

- Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude, behavior, and following of camp procedures.
- Provide healthcare to meet the individual needs of campers and staff.
- Deliver first aid and emergency care following camp procedures as needed.
- Follow health care procedures as described in camp’s policies and standing orders.
- Apply youth development principles to empower campers, embrace diversity, aid in competency development, and build connections.
- Assist in the implementation of staff training.
- Provide or ensure staff orientation is provided that covers standing orders, health office hours, specific camper health and social needs, health office procedures, emergency procedures, staff health, assessment of campers, policies on contacting parents, transportation to outside health facilities, accident prevention and risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting.
- Ensure staff and campers know their role related to health care and first aid.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of medical treatment according to camp procedures including transferring logs from unit and program area first aid kits to the general camp health log and logging all medications given to campers and staff.
- Ensure staff and camper health paperwork is current and on file.
- Verify with parent/legal guardian correct medications and dosage for all campers.
- Communicate with the Camp Director regarding emergencies or major health concerns.
- Screen all campers who are arriving and departing camp for signs of illness or abuse. This includes health screenings, lice checks, and temperature checks upon arrival at camp.
- Set up and manage the camp’s Health Office.
- Ensure safe and secure storage of all medications and health equipment.
- Participate as a member of the camp leadership team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, and all other all-camp activities and functions.
- Take action to keep camp clean and safe, including assisting in camp chores, caring for program materials, and reporting all maintenance issues in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Conduct inventory of health and first aid supplies at the beginning and end of the camp season.
- Order all medical supplies necessary to comply with standing medical orders and GSHOM procedures as needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials.
- Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including lodges, tents, kitchen, offices, and activity areas.
- Check and restock (if necessary) supplies in all first aid kits on a weekly basis.
- Supervise sanitary conditions throughout camp including a daily cleanliness check of units and other areas throughout camp.
- Prepare and record incident and accident report forms.
- Conduct check-ins with staff to ensure that they are feeling well and ready to work.
- Help mitigate risk of communicable diseases and other infections as necessary.
- Ensure adherence to safety and risk management guidelines to maintain high standards of health, safety, and supervision for campers and staff at all times.
- Assist in the responsibilities associated with upholding State of Michigan Licensing and American Camp Association regulations and standards.
- Support counseling staff with daily care and supervision of campers.
- Responsible for ensuring that daily and weekly functions of camp run in accordance with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) standards.

Education and Experience
- 18 years old or older.
- Previous experience with children’s camps or working with children preferred.
- Must have or be willing to obtain Responding to Emergencies and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications or higher.
- Previously demonstrated experience and knowledge in first aid, emergency management, child and adult injury care, and medication tracking.
- Possess endurance necessary for emergency care.
- Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters.
- Ability to drive to off-camp health provider, physician, or emergency treatment locations.
- Comfortable contacting parents concerning the status of their child’s health by telephone or email as needed.
- Knowledge of community health and health resources.
- Ability to collaborate with teammates and supervisors and cohabitate effectively in a communal environment.
- Possess valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Must become a member of Girl Scouts.
- Must have belief in (and ability to speak about passionately and with conviction) the mission and values of Girl Scouts, be willing to subscribe to the principles expressed in the Promise and Law, and aware of the needs of youth in our pluralistic society.
- Must be able to pass State and National background check.
Work Environment
Operates in a professional camp environment and will live on site. This role occasionally uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones. Ability and willingness to work in various activity areas within camp (archery, climbing wall, waterfront, horses, etc) in all types of weather from rain, snow, extreme heat and cold. Must be able to move around the camp property to assist campers in their activities. Will spend majority of hours each day standing and interacting with children.
Work Schedule
- Position requires flexibility with schedule, typical schedule is Sunday through Friday
- Position requires living on site and working evenings
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibility.
