GENERAL PURPOSE:

Outdoor Program On-Call staff lead year-round weekend programs and trips across the state for Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO). This position is responsible for facilitating activities including outdoor adventure sports, environmental education, and camp games and programs. This position is responsible for delivering high quality outdoor adventure programs that highlight high adventure, technical skill development, and leadership opportunities Girl Scout members. This position will support the Outdoor Adventure Club program, Troop Camps & Programs, and support other special events as needed. The scope of work is varied and includes the following program models: full weekend overnight camps, day only programs, teen outdoor adventure programs, and special events. Programs and trips occur at various locations across the state, generally at Girl Scout owned properties along the Front Range with camping trips and mountain travel in the summer. This position offers a very flexible schedule depending on staff availability. Staff self-select programs they are available for on a quarterly basis and schedules are determined at least four weeks before each event. The work schedule could include entire weekend (Friday through Sunday) programs, some weekday evenings, and some weekdays. Anticipate one to two weekends of work per month and/or up to two weekdays or weekday evenings depending on time of year.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES ***(Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job)

Program Facilitation o Facilitate high-quality outdoor programming for Girl Scouts ages 5 through 18, incorporating the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, national Girl Scout curriculum, and meeting outdoor program department objectives. o Implement programming that is exciting, progressive, skill based and inclusive of Girl Scouts of all ages, ability levels and from a variety of backgrounds. o Adapt activities and methods to individual and group needs and abilities, provide opportunities for participants to experience variety, challenge, and progression. o Participate in staff trainings, attend staff meetings, and contribute to the planning of scheduled programs and trips. o Collaborate with additional staff or adult volunteers assigned to activities with a problem-solving mindset and good communication. o Demonstrate a caring attitude and manner with campers. Act as a role model of Girl Scout values for campers, staff, and volunteers.

  • Camper Supervision o Guide participants in group cohesiveness that includes and appreciates all members and honors individuality. o Assist other Girl Scout program staff or program vendors by organizing the group, implementing positive behavior management, and assisting with instruction
  • Risk Management o Follow and educate participants on safety protocols to ensure the safety and wellbeing of campers. o Adjust program plans and respond to emergencies as appropriate in dynamic outdoor situations

Job Qualifications

Education and/or Formal Training

  • Have current, or willing to obtain the following certifications:
    • CPR/First Aid (required)
    • Wilderness First Aid / Wilderness First Responder (highly desired)
    • USA Level 1 Archery Instructor
    • American Canoe Association Paddle Sports Facilitator
    • Medication Administration Experience
  • Experience working with youth in an outdoor program, camp, educational, or volunteer setting preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Outdoor Program Skills and Abilities
    • Experience in developing and facilitating outdoor and camp programs
    • Experience working with children and adults in an informal outdoor setting. o Familiarity with concepts in recreation, environmental education, and experiential education
    • Familiarity with risk management in an outdoor setting, ability to respond appropriately and direct others in emergency situations
    • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, think quickly under pressure and modify programming design in dynamic situations
  • Youth Development Knowledge
    • Knowledgeable of the development needs of children, appropriate program engagement, and behavior management techniques
    • Ability to motivate, develop, inspire, engage, and relate to campers elementary to high school aged
Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check acceptable to GSCO standards
  • Access to registered transportation with insurance at required state levels to conduct business statewide
  • Valid driver's license and driving record acceptable to the Girl Scout insurance company standards

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED

  • This position works with program related equipment in areas such as hiking, archery, and other outdoor skills activities
  • Subject to injuries from falls, accidental strikes, cuts from equipment, etc

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

  • Ability to work non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends, and extended overnight periods on-site at programs
  • Ability to sleep in a group setting in rustic accommodations and potentially respond to camper need at all hours of the night
  • Requires extensive walking over uneven and unpaved terrain
  • Able to carry, lift and/or transfer at least 50 pounds
  • Travel over mountain roads which may include unpaved rough terrain
