Wrangler and Junior Wrangler

Description

The Wrangler and Junior Wrangler carry out equestrian programs and activities and assist with unit supervision and programs to provide a safe, fun, high quality Girl Scout camp experience for campers.

Resident Camp employment is seasonal, with dates of employment approximately May-August.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Assists with the plans and preparations of horseback activities to ensure fun, safe, age appropriate, challenging and creative programming for campers. Uses age and ability appropriate methods, patience, humor and enthusiasm to encourage campers enjoyment of all aspects of camp program
• Implements established procedures to ensure equestrian program compliance with all applicable policies, standards, criteria, guidelines and procedures. Assists in monitoring equestrian program operations to ensure all established health and safety standards are in place and followed by campers and staff.
• Maintains compliance with Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA), American Camp Association (ACA) and Council health and safety standards and procedures. Supports and positively interprets camp rules to campers and staff
• Carries out beginner to intermediate equestrian lessons and trail ride duties as scheduled. Ensures instructor/assistant instructor ratios are in place during all horseback riding activities. Establishes rapport with campers, teaches safety procedures in fun and creative ways, using tact and patience while ensuring that campers and staff follow all corral rules
• Assists with maintenance and cleaning of barn, tack, upper and lower corral, equipment and supplies. Assists with the care and feeding of horses as scheduled
• Plans and prepares for creative and fun inclement weather alternatives for horseback riding activities and trail rides. Implements quality alternative programming for cancelled equestrian activities
• Lives in camper unit as assigned. Assists with camper supervision & unit activities. Actively assists campers in getting acquainted, making friends, understanding one another, developing a group identity, & problem solving
• Sustains an environment which supports physical and emotional safety for campers and staff. Establishes and maintains good relationships with campers
• Assists in implementing closing camp operations. Assumes responsibility for cleaning, inventory, and storage of barn supplies, equipment and facilities

QUALIFICATIONS

• Meets GSUSA membership requirements and attained the minimum age of 17 for Junior Wrangler and a minimum age of 18 for Wrangler
• Abides by national and local Girl Scout policies, standards and procedures and American Camp Association standards and procedures
• Has strong equestrian riding experience and horse care knowledge
• Holds or willing to obtain CHA certification or has willingness to follow CHA guidelines during lessons
• Has experience teaching planned equestrian activities and trail rides, and successful experience working with groups of children
• Has demonstrated leadership, good judgment, maturity, flexibility and ability to maintain positive attitude
• Has energy, stamina and the ability to maintain patience and enjoy group living in the out of doors

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

If your position requires that you drive an average of one (1) day per week or more, you must possess a valid state drivers license and a driving record that is acceptable to our insurance carrier.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee:

• Is required to talk and hear, stand and walk, and is frequently very active which often requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping and crouching.
• Is required to reach with hands and arms
• Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

EXPOSURES

Work is performed in a normal indoor environment with limited exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dirt and/or dust AND work is occasionally performed in an outdoor environment with exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dirt and/or dust.
