Mission: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
Purpose: You are a first point of contact for shop customers in the Des Moines Leadership Center and are tasked with providing the highest level of customer service to all customers. Day-to-day duties in the Des Moines shop include assisting customers, following procedures for daily drawer balancing, receipting, and depositing payments, and making sure the shop is clean and stocked. In order to answer inquiries via phone, email, or in person, you are responsible for staying up to date on new information and available solutions. By shaping the experiences of customers when they walk into our largest leadership center, you play a key role in the council’s overall goals and supporting the Girl Scout mission.
A day in the life… (Essential functions)
- Support daily operations in the Des Moines shop, following best practices and standard operating procedures for retail shop operations.
- Respond to all inquiries in an appropriate, prompt, and efficient manner, working to provide a positive customer experience – for all inquiries, clarify information, research issues, locate, and deliver findings.
- Interact with customers via written communications, in person or by phone.
- Ring up customer transactions through the point-of-sale system.
- Reconcile daily shop sales and cash receipt records.
- Use case tracking, knowledge articles, and documented processes, entering customer data quickly and accurately and staying up to date on incoming questions and solutions.
- Work with the customer care team to identify retail case trends and propose solutions.
- Keep shop displays clean & rearrange to promote seasonal items, as necessary.
- Assist with equipment check-out process and tracking.
- Assist with GSGI Build-A-Bear appointments and events, as necessary.
- Prepare purchase orders for retail items.
- Prepare heat pressing for Girl Scout uniforms.
- Process online orders for GSGI merchandise, including shipping to customers.
- Assist with annual inventory process & ongoing inventory management.
- Perform inventory transfers, ensuring processes are executed fully within OpSuite.
- Follow retail shop schedule and ensure coverage as needed with a part-time schedule of 20 hours per week.
- Monday: 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Tuesday: 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Wednesday: 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Thursday: 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Additional hours, as needed, during peak season for events and Saturday shop hours. GSGI typically hosts five Saturday shopping opportunities that are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (subject to change).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
The fine print… (Qualifications)
- You must be able to comfortably navigate technology, including Microsoft Office and our POS and CRM-systems; basic typing aptitude required.
- You may be on the phone up to 10% of your day, depending on the season; must be able to communicate clearly and professionally on the phone.
- Shop hours may vary depending on customer needs; variations may include extended hours during the week (i.e. 6 p.m.) and one Saturday per month from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Individual staff schedule to be determined and subject to change.
- High school education or GED with a minimum of 3 years’ customer service experience or associate’s degree with 1 year experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Join the club! Each staff member is required to become a member of GSUSA.
- Flexibility is key. We’ll need you to work weekends and evenings as needed.

- Generally, climate-controlled office conditions.
- Minimal (less than 10%) travel within the council for staff meetings and special events.
