Position Summary

The Ropes Activity Specialist is responsible for implementing programs and activities as set forth by the Challenge Course Supervisor. The Ropes Activity Specialist also facilitates programs within GSGLA safety guidelines following the GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, delivery of programs on the high ropes and low ropes course, creating a positive learning environment in a summer camp setting, providing guidance to Activities Specialists, and assisting with the implementation of activities, enhancing camp program, and always ensuring the safety of campers.

GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deliver a ropes program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers.
    • Plan and follow the lead of the challenge course supervisor
    • Evaluate challenge course abilities of campers.
    • Deliver progressive and creative adventure program activities.
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
    • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures of our GSGLA policies.
    • Assist counselors with the development of activity kits for use by units and for special events.
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in activity area.
    • Maintain and clean activity equipment and activity area, keeping it free of hazards and debris.
    • Ensure that equipment and supplies are secure.
    • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
    • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
    • Attending and preparing for daily meetings, on time.
    • Assist where needed on camper arrival and departure days.
    • Be a village liaison, providing check in/out support, conduct daily visits to villages and provide outstanding customer service to families.
    • Engaging with campers at mealtimes.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Adequate experience with climbing, ropes courses, outdoor education, or similar.
  • Documented experience teaching or interacting with youth programs.
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR prior to first day of work.
  • Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.
  • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings.
  • Ability to live onsite acting in an on-duty capacity for the duration of the camp season.
  • The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely, without endangering the health or safety of themselves or others.
  • Communicates and works with all ages and skill levels and provides necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Observes camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforces appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Needs to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Constantly responds appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Frequently moves luggage, tables, chairs, and program equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Needs to traverse and move several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
  • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Needs to sustain activity at 6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation.
  • May lift up to 50 lbs. periodically. If more, the incumbent must request assistance.
  • Must be able to live in a rustic camp setting and work flexible hours.
  • Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience

  • College credits in health, child development, education, recreation, or related field.
  • Prior participation in high adventure programming in an overnight camp setting preferred.

GSGLA Employee Requirements

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
