Position Summary

The Camp Counselor - Lifeguard provides most of the camper-facing GSGLA day camp programming at Marine Landing. The Camp Counselor is responsible for leading programs and activities as set forth by the Camp Leadership Team, as well as facilitating programs within GSGLA safety guidelines. The position is also responsible for implementation of high-quality waterfront programming.

Marine Landing Day Camp

Marine Landing is a waterfront facility with its own private beach. Daily activities for campers include kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and swimming. Due to the nature and number of aquatic activities, every staff member at Marine Landing is required to be lifeguard certified. Training is provided before camp begins, if needed. This camp is the perfect location for those who have a strong comfort in the water, want to spend their summer outside and make friends and memories that will last a lifetime.

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their unit, within activities and throughout the camp to meet the intended camper outcomes.
    • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
    • Assure campers are always properly supervised.
    • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
  2. Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes. Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities. 
    • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned. 
    • Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities. 
    • Assist in program areas such as lifeguarding under the direction of the Waterfront Coordinator during boating and free swim rotations, and all camp activities, as directed.
  3. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
    • Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
    • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the Health and Inclusion Supervisor.
    • Be alert to campers’ and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with the Health and Inclusion Supervisor and/or Program Specialist when appropriate.
    • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the Camp Experience Manager.
  4. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in activity area.
    • Maintain and clean activity equipment and activity area, keeping it free of hazards and debris.
    • Ensure that equipment and supplies are secure.
    • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  5. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
    • Model exemplary behavior for campers and peers by adhering to camp protocols, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation, punctuality, and showcasing fairness and equity.
  6. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
    • Attend and prepare for daily meetings.
    • Assist where needed on camper check-in and check-out.
    • Be a support to co-counselor by ensuring each other takes breaks and covering for each other when necessary.
  7. Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be 18 years of age or be a high school graduate by the start of camp.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks of day camp (June 18, 2025 - August 22, 2025) and training dates that will be scheduled prior to camp.
  • Must hold valid Lifeguard and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers certifications throughout the position’s employment dates listed.  Training will be available.
  • Must hold valid waterfront module certification. Training will be available.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds periodically.
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience

  • Documented experienced teaching or interacting in youth programming

GSGLA Employee Requirements

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned

Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles requires its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to certain exemptions as required by law. New hires working at Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles must be fully vaccinated upon hire. Please contact the People & Culture Department for a copy of the vaccination policy.
