Assistant Controller
Girl Scouts River Valleys is seeking a detail-oriented and driven Assistant Controller to join our finance team. In this role, you will oversee critical accounting operations including Accounts Payable (A/P), Accounts Receivable (A/R), invoicing, and financial reporting. As an essential part of our team, you will play a key role in ensuring compliance with GAAP standards, managing month-end closes, and supporting budgeting and forecasting. You will also lead a team of 2 accounting professionals, helping to shape and improve processes that contribute to the financial health of the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership: Supervise and support a small team of accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare, review, and present detailed monthly financial statements (Statement of Activities, Statement of Financial Position, and variance reports) for both internal leadership and external stakeholders.
- Accounts Payable & Receivable: Oversee and ensure efficient processing of invoices, while managing the SAP Concur workflow for cash disbursements and monthly A/P accruals.
- Reconciliations: Lead monthly reconciliations of the general ledger, operating bank accounts, and inventory, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in reporting.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Collaborate with the Senior Director of Finance & Accounting to assist in budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation to maximize the use of organizational resources.
- Internal Controls & Compliance: Establish and maintain strong internal controls to ensure accuracy in financial statements and compliance with regulatory standards and best practices.
- Process Improvement: Identify and implement improvements in accounting processes and workflows to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Collaboration & Cross-Functional Support: Work closely with other departments to provide financial insights and operational analysis as needed.
- Training & Development: Mentor and coach your team, fostering growth and development while providing the necessary resources and support to maintain high performance.
- Audit Coordination: Assist in coordinating financial audits with external auditors, ensuring timely completion and resolution of audit requests.
- Investment Management: Maintain accurate records of investment activity, ensuring all transactions are correctly processed and documented.
- Cash Management: Oversee and monitor daily cash flow, ensuring that all cash accounts are accurately managed and reconciled.
- Inventory & Retail Services Liaison: Manage the monthly reconciliation of inventory and act as the point of contact with the Retail Services team to ensure alignment and accuracy.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
- 7 years of experience in accounting, with a strong focus on financial reporting and reconciliations.
- 3 years of supervisory experience, with a proven ability to lead and develop a team.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, with the ability to work across multiple systems.
- Knowledge of SAP Concur or similar accounting systems is preferred.
- Financial Expertise:
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Experience in nonprofit accounting or familiarity with nonprofit financial practices is a plus.
