What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Junior Camp Counselor position at Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois?
Locations: Camp McCormick, Stillman Valley, IL and Camp Dean, Big Rock, IL. This position may live on or off site.
Duration: Summer – May 27 – August 3, 2025
Salary: $400 Weekly

Reports to: Camp Director, Camp Assistant Director
Summary: Junior Counselors actively leads a unit of campers to provide quality programming in a safe, fun, supportive environment within the Girl Scout program model. This position is structured to build confidence and character in campers who graduated from our counselors-in-training (CIT) program.
Responsibilities:
- Work with counselors to provide care to campers. This includes morning/wake up, mealtimes, rest hours, camp kapers, outdoor skill activities, evening activities, all camp games, campfires, getting ready for bed, and after-hours as assigned.
- Teach camping skills and appreciation of the out-of-doors.
- Guide activities and experiences in the unit through use of girl-leader planning and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
- Assist in programming activities in outdoor skills, arts and crafts, nature conservation, STEM, and more.
- Assist in unit housekeeping, sanitation, care of supplies and equipment.
- Lead activities within the unit with team of peers.
- Assist in the opening and closing of camp as directed.
- Take precautions to ensure personal health.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings on time and in uniform.
- Be a role model for campers in words, deeds, and actions
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with campers, parents, and staff.
- Provide a safe and fun atmosphere for campers to explore, learn, and create while developing personally
- May work weekdays or weekends.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Be at least 16 years old and have completed the CIT-II program through GSNI
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to maneuver through camp without assistance and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Integrity, good character, good judgment
- Desire and ability to work with children, peers, and adults in an outdoors setting.
- Ability to place needs of campers above own
Additional Requirements:
- Be guided in all actions by the Girl Scout Mission, Promise, and Law.
- Be a registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA)
- Accept the principles and beliefs of Girl Scouting and comply with the most current policies, procedures, and guidelines of GSNI and GSUSA.
- Complete required training as assigned and provided by GSNI and GSUSA.
Required to attend:
- All check-in and checkout for all sessions
- All camp activities such as games, campfire, and special events
- All meals, including packouts in units
