Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey is looking for energetic, fun, organized, and caring staff to provide memorable experiences to girls in a safe and engaging environment! At Jockey Hollow, there are 212 pristine acres to explore and enjoy. With a large "L"-shaped swimming pool, Low Ropes Challenge Course and Zip Line, beautiful equestrian center, archery range, playing field, and adventurous hiking trails, the fun is endless!
Assistant Camp Director supports the Camp Director in all aspects of managing the summer day camp, which may include supporting with coordinating and developing camp-wide programs, supporting staff and campers and resolve daily issues. They will focus on enriching campers' experiences by providing organized programs and all camp events to the day camp.
Immediate Supervisor: Camp Director
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Develops and delivers a summer camp program to meet the needs of today’s girls.
- Trains, supervises, and evaluates seasonal staff. Provides in-service training for all staff.
- Lead and build upon GSNNJ summer camp curriculum established in the brochure.
- Provide a camp program that is safe, healthy, educational, challenging, fun, and complies with ACA program standards, GSUSA, and the NJ Youth Camp Safety Act Standards: Department of Health.
- Work Cooperatively with GSNNJ Administrative staff, and rangers to ensure the highest level of safety, health, and activities for campers, and staff.
- Develop further the council program set forth for the summer that relate, educate, and challenge campers individually and cooperatively.
- Create camper Unit Lists
- Assign staff to Units weekly
- Support GSNNJ mission and purpose at all times.
- Periodically checks in on camp operations and participates in day-to-day activities and/or trips to monitor quality and assist staff in delivery of camp program.
- Provides leadership in staff management, including helping staff with camper behavior management and staff coaching
- Assist with communication of camp business to camp staff, campers, and parents.
- Payroll: Ensures staff log hours into Paylocity software weekly and submits timesheets to Payroll and HR.
- Works with Camp Director on Mid-Point and Final Evaluations.
- Must be able to stay and sleep over for at least two out of the three overnights
Must be able to stay at camp until the end of campfire for the overnights not staying overnight for
- Follow all procedures established in the Camp Communicable Disease Plan to mitigate risks associated with communicable diseases including Covid19. Make suggestions to improve Communicable Disease Plan or implementation of Plan.
- Take on other duties as assigned.
Before Camp
- Actively assist in being a lead designer, organizer, and trainer of staff training
- Assists in coordinating/implementing camp open house program.
- Complete needed trainings
- Meet with Camp Director periodically by phone, email, or one on one to be updated on changes and to work ahead to provide the best camp program possible.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- Knowledge of Girl Scout program, child development, and outdoor education
- Deep experience in youth programming
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work under changing priorities and deadlines
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Ability to effectively identify, analyze, and handle conflict resolution at all levels with a variety of people including senior management, staff, external customers, Girl Scout volunteers, etc.
- Management skills and demonstrated people management skills are essential
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Well versed across Lake Rickabear Camp Curriculum or willingness to get proficient with it.
- Ability to work an extended summer season, including camp open house events, and meetings to prepare for or conclude the summer season
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification is required upon employment. Lifeguarding, archery, or education credentials are welcomed and encouraged.
Physical Requirements
- Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
- Daily exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
- Must be able to work in a rustic camp environment with limited access to electricity, cell phone service and internet.
Daily Rate: $175 (new staff) - $180 per day (returning staff). This is based on a 8.5 hour work day, which translates to $20.59 - $21.18 hourly respectively.
