The Girl Scout mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Behind every Girl Scout and volunteer is a team of local staff ready to help them earn that next badge, embark on a camping adventure, or organize an impactful service project. We are Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey (GSNNJ) serving girls in grades K-12 in Bergen, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and northern Warren counties. We bring the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to 18,000 girls and 10,000 adult members.
We are looking for energetic, fun, organized, and caring staff to provide memorable experiences to girls in a safe and engaging environment! This role will help with organizing and administering the activities at the waterfront/pool consistent with Girl Scouts of the USA, American Camp Association and New Jersey Department of Health and Youth Camp Services.
Location: Ability to work at both Lake Rickabear and Jockey Hollow campsites is preferred, but not required.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of all swimmers at the campsite(s). This role involves monitoring activities in and around the water, enforcing safety rules, responding to emergencies, and providing first aid when necessary.
- Effectively communicate and work with a diverse group of staff and campers (background/abilities) to encourage full participation in Girl Scouting.
- Provide organized and educational waterfront programs in a safe manner. Programs include swimming classes, boating classes and free swim periods
- Responsible for keeping the entire waterfront area clean and free of debris.
- Responsible for the care and maintenance of waterfront equipment
- Must follow and enforce all safety rules and regulations of the waterfront.
- Must follow the guidelines of the American Red Cross in swimming and boating safety procedures.
- Must always be alert to the campers in the water and their needs.
- Must assist with the buddy system and checks.
- Must learn and perform emergency procedures effectively.
- Must wear uniform bathing suit, shorts, whistle, and identifiable waterfront lifeguard shirt while on duty (shirt provided by Lake Rickabear Day Camp & Jockey Hollow Day Camp).
- Performs other duties as requested by the Site Manager/Outdoor Program Manager/GSNNJ Council Staff.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum Age:16
- Current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
- For Lake Rickabear: Must also have American Red Cross certificate for Waterfront Skills
- Ability to follow directions from the Site Manager and enforce Girl Scout Safety procedures.
- Ability to learn and effectively perform emergency procedures, lifeguard for boating/swimming programs.
- Individuals must be safety conscious and have sound judgement.
- Must be able to work in the Fall and/or Spring
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
- Must be able to work in an uneven terrain and rustic camp environment with limited access to electricity, cell phone service and internet.
- The candidate must have experience working with children.

- During Program Hours: Site Manager
- Outside of Program Hours: Camp Director and/or Outdoor Program Manager
