Girl Scouts of South Carolina – Mountains to Midlands is the largest organization serving girls in South Carolina. The council has a current membership of close to 6,000 girls, more than 3,000 volunteers and a staff of 42 (plus an additional 25 seasonally). Are you ready to lead transformative outdoor adventures and create life-changing experiences for young girls?  As the Program Manager (Outdoor) & Camp WaBak Director, you will have the unique opportunity to inspire and guide outdoor programming across the entire council. With a special focus on overseeing Camp WaBak operations, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping year-round outdoor events, building key partnerships, and empowering a network of dedicated volunteers.


In this role, you'll be at the forefront of delivering top-tier, safe, and inclusive programs that embody the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. You'll also ensure Camp WaBak meets the highest standards, including American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation and our commitment to DEIRJ values. From managing budgets to recruiting, training, and mentoring seasonal staff, you'll be hands-on in every aspect of program development and implementation.  As a leader, you'll be responsible for collaborating with our marketing department for program promotion and awareness.  


This is a year-round, on-site position at Camp WaBak, so in addition to the annual salary offered, this position includes council provided housing at Camp WaBak where you will live and breathe the mission, making a lasting impact every single day.  The position also includes a $200 monthly utility stipend and a monthly cell phone stipend.

OBJECTIVES / RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Work Distribution (approximate): Summer Camp 50%, Girl Program 30%, Volunteer Support 15% and Misc./Administrative 5%.
  • Camp WaBak Summer Camp Leadership: Serve as Camp WaBak Summer Camp Director, overseeing all aspects of the overnight camp program, including budget development and management, session planning, staff and camper recruitment, training, supervision, performance evaluation, and weekly program delivery. 
  • Outdoor Program Development & Implementation: Design, create, and implement a diverse range of progressive year-round outdoor programs, events, and partnerships that support girl and troop outdoor leadership development. This includes exploring and adapting program offerings to maximize usage of all council camp properties.   
  • Safety & Risk Management: Ensure the safety and risk management of all camp and outdoor programs, adhering to ACA accreditation standards, Girl Scouts of USA (GSUSA), Girl Scouts of South Carolina—Mountains to Midlands (GSSCMM), local, state, and other regulatory requirements. Know and implement the camp crisis management/emergency procedures when needed.
  • Caregiver & Camper Relations: Maintain year-round positive relationships and communication with caregivers and campers, while building trust, addressing concerns, and solving problems efficiently in accordance with Girl Scout principles and policies. 
  • Budget Management: In collaboration with the Director of Programs, prepare and administer the budget for camp and outdoor programs. Regularly monitor expenses to ensure the outdoor program is meeting financial expectations.  

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred (emphasis in recreation management, health services, outdoor resource management, nonprofit management) or High School Diploma or GED and equivalent experience in a related experience required. 
  • At least two prior seasons of administrative or supervisory experience in an organized camp .
  • Must be 25 years of age or older to meet American Camp Association (ACA) requirement. 
  • Supervisory experience including strong leadership skills to motivate, hold accountable, and retain a high performing seasonal staff. 
  • Excellent listening and interpretive skills to identify, assess, and respond to customer needs. 
  • Superior organizational skills, with the ability to carry out a variety of responsibilities with shifting priorities. 
  • Meticulous attention to detail, organizational and time management skills; the capacity to manage daily workflows and deadlines with equanimity. 
  • Upon hire, must hold personal membership in the Girl Scout organization and subscribe to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Must have personal transportation and the ability to drive; possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license, maintain personal auto insurance meeting council insurance company’s requirement for coverage, and submit to background search.
