Assistant Camp Director
Girl Scouts of Western Ohio is seeking a camp leader to join us as our Assistant Camp Director for the 2025 Summer Camp season! This position will serve as a direct manager for two overnight camp properties - Camp Whip Poor Will in Morrow, OH and also Camp Libbey in Defiance, Ohio - completing half of the summer at Camp Whip Poor Will and the other half at Camp Libbey. The Assistant Camp Director serves as the right hand leader to the Camp Director - managing up to 25 camp counselor staff and filling in as interim camp leader in the Director's absence. The ACD works a weekly schedule of 6 days per week and includes a daily break schedule and housing and meals are included as part of the camp staff package! This is an exciting seasonal leadership position with the chance to spend the summer outdoors enjoying fun girl adventures. Our summer camp season begins in late May and runs through early August, the camp leadership staff will start on May 19th and we provide a full training and onboarding program for all staff in preparation to effectively lead and participate in summer programming with our girls! Camp Libbey: Nestled along the strikingly beautiful banks of the Maumee River, Camp Libbey is located just outside Defiance, Ohio. Camp Libbey Camp Libbey has offered a variety of camping experiences since 1936. With almost 600 acres of fields, forests, and ravines, Camp Libbey is a great place to start your outdoor adventure! Our camp offers a variety of positions that support the girls in their daily adventures such as hiking, archery, creek paddling, and enjoying the climbing wall or taking a ride down our waterslide before a dip in the swimming pool!
Camp Whip Poor Will: Camp Whip Poor Will’s 500 acres are jam-packed with various facilities, program areas, and endless woods, creeks, and trails, allowing girls to choose their own adventures. Accredited by the American Camp Association for its high standards in both facilities and programs, Camp Whip Poor Will offers a variety of outdoor experiences plus great lodging options for first-time campers and experienced outdoor enthusiasts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist the camp director in organizing, directing, coordinating and supervising the operational aspects of the camp and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and assuming responsibility for total camp management in the camp director’s absence.
- Provide team leadership and management of assigned staff by providing regular, documented coaching and evaluations.
- Assist the camp director in planning and conducting pre-camp, in-service trainings, and the closing of camp.
- Work with the leadership team to schedule staff including weekly unit assignments and time off.
- Assist the camp director in organizing and supervising opening/closing day procedures for camp operation.
- Assist the camp director in handling all financial accounting, including receipts and other financial records for resident camp.
- Assist the camp director with managing the volunteers and outside vendors helping with camp during the camp season and scheduling volunteers throughout the summer. Working with the camp director to assess and provide needed training and support for volunteers.
- Interpret and maintaining local, state, American Camp Association and GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints standards for health and safety.
- Prepare evaluations and summaries of current season of business procedures and recommendations for the following year.
- Communicate and provide excellent customer service to parents as needed, to ensure parents are informed and involved in resolution of camper issues.
- Direct one or more weeks of off-site day camp programs, as well as supervise the staff responsible for implementation.
- Manage overall camp budget, including securing receipts, camp invoices, and credit cards.
- Oversee camp inventory and ordering of program and office supplies.
- Drive the camp van to transport campers or staff as needed.
- Assist unit staff in units and with programs as needed.
GENERAL FUNCTIONS
- Guide activities and experiences through the use of girl planning and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
- Observe camper behavior, assessing its appropriateness, enforcing appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures and applying appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Help to build good relations with parents/guardians and camp visitors.
- Provide coverage in sleep units as assigned to contribute to staff ratios and assisting with unit housekeeping, sanitation, care of supplies and equipment.
- Provide supervision to children during meal and recreation activities.
- Participate in general camp program activities.
- Coordinate unit activities with those of the entire camp.
- Submit all required weekly and end-of-season reports on time.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 21 years of age with a high diploma or GED equivalent.
- Current American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification (can be acquired upon employment).
- Previous camp experience and camp or business administrative experience.
- Ability to train and supervise staff.
- Ability to communicate and work with groups of girls ages 5–17 and provide necessary verbal instruction to campers.
- Physical ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
- Ability to respond in a crisis management situation.
- Current and valid US driver's license. (National driver’s background check will be required prior to driving for the organization.)
- Successful completion of a medical examination.
- Successful completion of fingerprinting and background check in accordance with Ohio and federal law.
- Other requirements determined by Girl Scouts of Western Ohio.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
Our Overnight Camp staff positions are full-time throughout camp season. The days of work are primarily Sunday through Friday. Staff are expected to stay overnight throughout the summer. Staff receive a two-hour break Monday - Thursday. Staff will have housing and food provided during working hours.
