Position Summary
Girls Preparatory School seeks a passionate coaching professional who will lead our competitive basketball program and serve as the Head Varsity Coach. In order for the position to be full-time, it will be combined with another vacant full-time role at the school that aligns with the candidate’s skill set. Current opportunities include a role in the admissions office, Athletics Operations & Social Media Coordinator, Art Teacher, IT Administrator, Science Teacher, and possibly other positions that will be added to our careers page as they become available. Duties & Responsibilities
As a member of the athletic department, the ideal candidate will show the ability to provide leadership, organization, and supervision for the entire sixth- through 12th-grade basketball program in a manner that aligns with the mission of the broader athletic program at GPS. This individual will be responsible for providing direction, instruction, and supervision to female student athletes so they achieve a high level of skill and an appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Strategic Partnerships, the person in this role will:
- Have a comprehensive understanding of running a sixth- through 12th-grade basketball program and value the development of middle school players to progress through and impact our varsity program;
- Instruct and demonstrate the skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team achievement in basketball, aiding the educational and individual growth of team members;
- Implement and maintain a standard of performance consistent with the institution’s goals of athletic excellence while supporting the school’s standards for academic and personal discipline;
- Plan and set up activities, practices, and interscholastic contests;
- Develop appropriate training programs and practice schedules and travel with student-athletes on the team bus to and from all games;
- Enforce discipline policies, emphasize good sportsmanship in word and behavior, and advocate healthy lifestyles;
- Support and advocate the school’s belief in the value of multi-sport participation;
- Maintain a safe environment for all student athletes at all times;
- Work closely with the Director of Athletics and Strategic Partnerships and the Associate Athletic Director for Operations in preparing practice and game schedules; purchasing uniforms, equipment and supplies; and collecting necessary medical forms;
- Monitor sustainable budgetary practices for the sport and notify the Director of Facilities for needs or improvements as soon as possible;
- Maintain appropriate certifications and training as required;
- Follow and maintain knowledge of all TSSAA policies, rules, and procedures;
- Inform local media of scores, stats, and stories related to the program;
- Assist in the recruitment of student-athletes with aspirations of participating in college; and
- Interact thoughtfully and courteously with all students, staff, parents and officials and resolve conflict in a professional manner, professionally representing Girls Preparatory School at all times.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required;
- At least five years working as a basketball coach in a school, club, and/or college environment; and
