About The Role

Job Title: Controller

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer (COO)

FTE: Full Time

FLSA: Exempt

Salary Range: $90,000 - $115,000

Position Purpose: The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of Giving Kitchen’s financial operations. This includes treasury management, cash flow and liquidity strategy, financial planning and analysis (FP&A), accounting, compliance, client program management, and risk mitigation strategies.

The Controller may also directly supervise finance team members and will have dotted-line oversight or cross-functional collaboration responsibilities with staff in Programs, Development, and business operations whose roles impact or intersect with financial systems, compliance, and reporting.

This role is essential to ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial practices that support Giving Kitchen’s mission. The Controller will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO).

What You Will Do

Treasury Management & Cash Flow Strategy

  • Develop and implement effective cash flow and liquidity strategies to ensure the organization has the resources to meet its operational and programmatic needs.
  • Oversee investment management for the organization’s reserve accounts, with the potential to later manage an endowment fund.
  • Lead all banking relationships, ensuring the organization has the appropriate tools for daily operations and long-term planning.

Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)

  • Create comprehensive financial plans and budgets that align with organizational goals and priorities.
  • Set accurate income projections and allocate expenses across programs and operational needs.
  • Establish and track financial goals for program funding, ensuring long-term sustainability.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the board, business reports for monthly budget reviews, and other needed financial reports.

Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Supervise finance and accounting team members and provide dotted-line leadership, guidance, and oversight to staff in other departments (e.g., Programs, Development, Events, and Operations) for tasks that impact financial systems, processes, and compliance.
  • Provide insight into decision-making related to new initiatives, including signature events, brand campaigns, and ROI assessments.
  • Collaborate with other departments to assess financial implications and guide financial decisions for the organization.
  • Foster a collaborative and accountable work environment across departments to support organization-wide financial stewardship.

Accounting & Bookkeeping

  • Ensure accurate recording of income and expenses, including program and operating/business-related transactions.
  • Manage accounts payable and receivables, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
  • Oversee monthly financial close processes and internal reconciliation routines (including banking).
  • Ensure proper management of grant requirements, including tracking and reporting against restrictions.
  • Maintain proper documentation and reporting for audit readiness, collaborating with Programs and Development teams as needed.

Income Accounting & CRM Management

  • Oversee the pledge process, including invoicing, payment options, tracking payments, and ensuring proper integration with financial and CRM systems.
  • Manage donation collection, deposits, and ensuring accurate synchronization between financial and CRM databases.
  • Ensure proper management of cashbox for event donations and maintain a clear chain of custody across teams.
  • Ensure timely and accurate tax-deductible notifications are distributed to donors.

Client Program Management

  • Define eligibility criteria for financial disbursements and manage the client disbursement process, ensuring compliance and timely processing.
  • Manage the appeal process for rejected applications and ensure proper follow-up on unclaimed checks.
  • Monitor and report on program outcomes and financial impact.

Financial Controls & Compliance

  • Develop and implement internal control procedures to prevent loss and fraud, ensuring safeguarding of assets.
  • Train and enforce spend policies, including internal control procedures, to mitigate risk and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Ensure adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and oversee preparation for audits, including the 990 filing.
  • Provide support for payroll and benefits inquiries, ensuring accurate processing and compliance.
  • Oversee accounts payable, ensuring proper processing of bills and payments.

Risk Management & Compliance

  • Oversee event management controls to ensure proper licensing, permits, and contracts are in place.
  • Oversee purchasing processes and ensure compliance with sales tax regulations.
  • Advise Programs on fraud prevention strategies and ensure adherence to safeguarding protocols for organizational assets.
  • Manage relationships with legal and regulatory partners to ensure compliance with relevant laws and requirements.
  • Regularly track and update organizational assets, conduct risk assessments, and maintain data security protocols.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred).
  • At least 5 years of experience in financial management or accounting, with a minimum of 2 years in a Controller role
  • Demonstrated experience managing or supervising finance staff or cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in nonprofit financial management and knowledge of IRS regulations regarding 501(c)(3) organizations.
  • Proven track record in managing financial controls, compliance, and risk mitigation strategies.

Skills And Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial planning, and analysis processes, along with financial reporting and budgeting.
  • Ability to manage complex accounting systems and CRM databases - experience with QuickBooks and Salesforce required.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and advise senior leadership.
