Job Summary:
The Outpatient Medical Director for Mental Health and Psychiatric Care is responsible for overseeing clinical operations, policies, and procedures within an outpatient behavioral health facility. This role ensures high-quality psychiatric care, maintains regulatory compliance, and provides leadership to medical and clinical staff. The Medical Director will act as a collaborative physician across the state of Virginia, support emergency psychiatric coverage needs, and conduct wellness assessments and follow-up care for a small number of patients.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Leadership & Oversight:
- Develop, implement, and maintain clinical policies and procedures to ensure best practices in psychiatric care and regulatory compliance.
- Provide medical oversight for psychiatric services, ensuring adherence to evidence-based mental health treatment protocols.
- Act as a collaborative physician for psychiatric nurse practitioners and physician assistants across the state of Virginia.
- Conduct routine chart reviews and provide clinical supervision as required by state regulations.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives to enhance mental health service delivery and patient outcomes.
Patient Care & Psychiatric Wellness Assessments:
- Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and wellness assessments, including screenings for mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders.
- Develop individualized treatment plans incorporating psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and other psychiatric interventions.
- Provide direct psychiatric care as needed, ensuring timely and appropriate mental health intervention.
- Support a multidisciplinary approach to psychiatric care by collaborating with therapists, social workers, case managers, and other mental health professionals.
Emergency Coverage & Crisis Response:
- Provide emergency psychiatric coverage when needed, ensuring continuity of mental health care.
- Assist in developing psychiatric crisis response protocols and training clinical staff on proper procedures.
- Act as a point of contact for urgent psychiatric medical decisions and escalations.
Collaboration & Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local healthcare regulations, including Virginia state psychiatric care guidelines.
- Work closely with administrative and clinical teams to align psychiatric services with organizational goals.
- Participate in state and local mental health advisory committees to advocate for advancements in outpatient psychiatric care.
- Support training and development of clinical staff to enhance professional growth and service quality in psychiatric treatment.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree with specialization in Psychiatry.
- Board certification in Psychiatry.
- Active and unrestricted medical license in the state of Virginia.
- Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in psychiatry, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Experience in outpatient psychiatric or behavioral health settings preferred.
- Strong understanding of mental health regulations, quality improvement initiatives, and patient safety protocols.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience acting as a collaborative physician in Virginia for psychiatric providers.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and telepsychiatry services.
- Advanced certification in healthcare leadership or administration (e.g., CPE, MBA, or MPH).
