We are looking for a compassionate veterinary assistant to join our organization. The veterinary assistant will be responsible for performing administrative tasks, assisting veterinary staff in examining and monitoring animal patients, and maintaining clean and sanitary conditions in exam and operating rooms. The ideal candidate will be willing to learn new skills and develop their talents as an assistant. Must have a passion for caring for animals, and excellent customer-service skills as the veterinary assistant will work directly with animal owners.
Veterinary Assistant Duties and Responsibilities
- Care for animals by bathing, feeding, watering, and with exercising
- Sanitize examining rooms and surface areas
- Assist in holding and restraining animals during exams
- Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and tools
- Ensure exam and operating rooms are stocked
- Assist vet and vet technicians with surgical procedures
- Provide care for animals after procedures
- Change animal bandages, bedding, and kennel materials
- Ensure all cages and kennels are clean
- Administer medications
- Assist in collecting samples such as blood or urine for testing
- Assist in emergency first aid
- Communicate with owners and families on surgery and recovery instructions
- Educate owners about animal health, conditions, and proper care
- Perform administrative duties such as updating files and processing payments
- Answer phones and field animal owner questions in a calm and professional manner, help to schedule appointments or confirm refill requests.
Veterinary Assistant Requirements and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; Approved Veterinary Assistant
- Certification a plus; Associate’s degree or course credit in veterinary technology or animal science from an American Veterinary Medical Association-accredited program a plus
- One (1) year previous experience in animal care or in a clinic preferred but not necessary
- Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel)
- Basic understanding of animal behavior and health care
- Passion for working with animals and their owners
- Interpersonal communication skills to communicate with owners and other veterinary staff
- Ability to prioritize and manage numerous different patient needs at one time
- Attention to detail in order to maintain accurate patient records
- Physical ability to restrain larger pets when necessary
