JOB SUMMARY:
The main focus is on tree maintenance, including pruning, small to medium tree removal, and assessing tree health and risks. The Park Maintenance 2 position is a more skilled position requiring a Class C Driver’s License and an IL Pesticide License. Under the direction and supervision of the Manager of Natural Areas & Outdoor Education, the primary responsibilities will be managing our forested areas while balancing wilderness protection and recreation in beautiful, inspiring natural areas and parks. While tree care and maintenance will be the primary focus, assisting with restoration and landscaping projects in our natural areas and formal landscaping beds will be another component of the position to enhance our parks and facilities. Will also be responsible for tree/shrub installation and mapping for our Memorial Tree Program and re-forestation as needed. Duties will include but are not limited to monitoring the health and maintenance of our trees through inspection, trimming and pruning, on-going landscape and trail maintenance projects, using herbicides and insecticides to address pest, weed and disease control, seed collection and propagation, assisting with prescribed burns and wetland/prairie restoration, assisting with community garden plots, and leading volunteers during various clean-up days. Ability to work well independently with little supervision to perform assigned duties, serve as a crew leader while directing others, and as a team member on a crew. Supplemental duties include participating in the Parks On-Call rotation, snow removal, special event set-up/take down, trash collection, and other duties as assigned. Some weekend and evening work will be required. This is an at-will position.
Hours: Monday – Friday 7:00am – 3:30 pm, occasional weekend and special events required. Approximately 40 hours per week with some overtime possible.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING:
· Ideal candidates will be reliable, self-motivated, and ambitious with a strong sense of safety.
· Minimum three years of experience in arborist and grounds maintenance work is required.
· Experience with power tools and equipment used for tree trimming and other grounds maintenance.
· An IL Pesticide Operator License is required.
· An ISA Arborist certification is a plus, with incentives to achieve certified status at a later date if not.
· Knowledge of and the ability to identify and care for trees and shrubs is required with similar ability related to native plants and invasives highly desired.
· Knowledge of tree pests and diseases, including identification, prevention and management is a plus.
· A valid IL Class C Driver’s License is required and must be maintained along with a safe driving record.
· Familiarity with the Glen Ellyn area is helpful.
· High school diploma or equivalent is required with additional coursework and/or related training preferred.
· Effective organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to shift tasks are essential.
· Proficient computer skills including MS Office (Outlook, Excel, and Word) and Internet search abilities necessary to perform job duties. Previous experience utilizing a work order system is preferred.
· Ability to read, interpret, and utilize technical manuals, drawings, and instructions.
· Capacity to read, understand, and communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
· Effective communication, customer service, and leadership skills.
· Good problem-solving skills with the capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations.
· Possess strong safety awareness and utilize sound judgment in all aspects of this position.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential.
· Must be in good physical condition to perform manual labor, stand/walk for extended periods, and have sufficient strength to lift and/or move 50 pounds or more on a regular basis.
· Ability to work outside in various weather conditions including extreme heat, humidity, cold, wind, snow, etc.
· Available to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends to maintain operations, support special events, etc.
· CPR/AED/First Aid certified or capacity to receive within 3 months of hire.
· Must pass a pre-employment physical with drug screen.
