Lifeguard/Swim Instructor

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction and supervision of the Special Facilities Manager and Pool Managers, the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor will provide instruction for swim lessons and supervise swimmers while monitoring and supervising designated swimming areas. Duties include but are not limited to: following appropriate curriculum for the swim level assigned, monitoring and communicating progress to parents, keeping daily records, maintaining constant surveillance to ensure the safety of participants in the water, adhering to and enforcing all policies and procedures, completing required weekly in-service trainings, and assist with maintaining the cleanliness of the pool deck. Additionally, will recognize and prevent potential hazardous or accident situations. This is an at-will position.
Season Dates: May 24 – September 1, 2025
Orientation Dates: Starting in Mid-May with details to follow.
Hours: Weekday and weekend shifts beginning at 6am and ending at 10pm.
Shifts are generally 4-6 hours long but vary depending on age and experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be comfortable in the water with the ability to swim 200 yards using either a breaststroke or freestyle without stopping, tread water for two minutes without the use of arms and hands and perform a feet first surface drive to retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of a 12 ft. pool.
- Excellent eyesight including close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus for extended periods of time.
- Strong voice, phone, and listening skill with the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds (i.e. machinery or other alarms, equipment malfunction, phone or other communication device, etc.) Moderate exposure to noise from patrons, staff or equipment operation in adjacent areas.
- Capacity to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift, push, move, or carry 50 pounds or more while performing training or actual rescue, moving equipment, and/or supplies.
- Moderate exposure to chemicals such as chlorine, cleaning solvents, grease, fumes, airborne particles, etc.
- Ability to spend the majority of time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions, including high heat and humidity.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING:
- The ideal candidate will be service oriented, dependable and reliable, with a strong sense of safety and responsibility for the teaching and care of children and adults.
- Previous experience interacting with children is preferred.
- Must be 15 or older with reliable transportation to and from work.
- Confident in ability to swim and comfortable in the water for long periods of time.
- Confident in instructing swim lessons for individuals of all ages and abilities.
- Ability to focus for periods of time with attention to detail is essential.
- Strong and effective communication skills with the ability and desire to provide quality customer service is essential.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Available to work a flexible schedule including mornings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ellis and Associates Lifeguard certified, or willing to become certified within 30 days of hire (training provided by the Glen Ellyn Park District).
- Proficient in MS Outlook or other email system for communication, with aptitude to learn and use other systems/applications.
- First Aid and CPR/AED certification required or able to obtain within 30 days of hire.
PLEASE NOTE: Applicants under the age of 16 will be required to work within specific parameters and submit a Work Permit prior to starting work. Expectation is that all staff will be available for the entire pool season (or as close as possible) with a limit of one week of absence for a scheduled family vacation or similar that should be discussed at time of hire. Various shift options are available and can be discussed during the interview process.
