Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Camp AM/PM Lead Counselor, the Camp AM/PM Counselor is responsible for the safety, supervision, and enjoyment of the Glencoe Park District Camp Participants. The Camp AM/PM Counselor focuses on working at their assigned before- and aftercare spaces with campers ranging from incoming Kindergarten through 4th grade. This position is assigned to a group of campers, ensuring proper supervision and engagement in before- and/or aftercare activities.

    Qualifications:

    • Must be at least 16 years old or older.
    • Previous camp or childcare experiences are strongly preferred.
    • All employees must pass a criminal background check, which the Glencoe Park District will pay for.
    • PM Counselor: Must be available to work daily from 3-6 PM during June, July, and August.
    • Must possess CPR/AED/First Aid certification or be willing to obtain it upon hire.


    Required Knowledge:

    Must be able to provide safe, age-appropriate interactions and activities for children in grades K-4 in a professional demeanor.


    Required Skills:

    Must be punctual, dependable, and flexible, with good safety awareness and sound judgment. Workers must be able to understand and follow rules and instructions. Must have the ability to read, write, and organize material.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Report to work promptly at the time assigned.
    • Provide and facilitate daily activities for the program, including, but not limited to, passive play, free play, and structured organized group games.
    • The Camp AM/PM Counselor will plan, organize, lead, and supervise group activities.
    • Maintain a physical environment that is safe, clean, and conducive to the optimal growth and development of the children in the program.
    • Establish and maintain a good relationship with all campers, families, and Glencoe Park District.
    • To support parents, encourage involvement, and maintain open and honest communication while using tact, discretion, and sensitivity.
    • Promote and supervise activities that promote each child's healthy emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development.
    • Provide and maintain a neat and organized program area; take responsibility for the upkeep of all equipment and materials.
    • Closely supervise all activities to ensure the safety of each child at all times.
    • Assist in the preparation and distribution of snacks.
    • Assist the children in self-care routines.
    • Work extra hours as necessary.
    • Attend all special events, trips, and meetings as assigned.
    • Immediately report all accidents and unsafe conditions to the Lead Counselor and complete and submit accident forms immediately.
    • Cooperate and assist in the investigation of accidents.
    • Attend all required safety programs and in-service education meetings.
    • Treat public complaints and concerns with the utmost attention. Be courteous in all cases.
    • Dress appropriately for the position: clean hygiene, gym shoes, camp shirt, shorts or pants, District-provided whistle, no sandals or flip-flops.
    • Keep AM and PM care spaces, supplies, and equipment neat and in good condition.
    • Clean the work area before leaving each day.
    • Bring any concerns to your supervisor before they become an issue.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Lead Counselor, Program Manager, and Director of Recreation and Facilities.
    • Must receive prior authorization from the Program Manager to take time off, except in the event of illness. Must obtain prior approval from the Program Manager to secure a substitute, except in the event of an illness. 


    Pay Scale:

    This is a seasonal part-time, non-exempt (hourly) position. The intended starting pay for this position is $16 per hour, with a full pay scale ranging from $16 per hour to $18 per hour.


    Final compensation will be determined in good faith based on an evaluation of the candidate's qualifications, experience, and the recommendation of the Assistant Director of Recreation and Facilities, or the Deputy Director/Director of Recreation and Facilities.
