Schenectady County's Glendale Nursing Home is seeking a Part Time Activities Assistant.

The position involves the responsibility for assisting the Activities Director in executing the residents’ activity program. The incumbent visits residents on a one-to-one basis as directed by the Activities Director. The incumbent will also be expected to work nights and weekends. The work is performed under the supervision of the Activities Director with leeway given for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Performs related work as required. Must be available to work weekends and holidays
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Leads group activities as directed by the Activities Director;
- Assists in planning activities and may be required to maintain written records of the residents’ participation in group activities;
- Visits with residents on a one-to-one basis as directed by the Activities Director for the purposes of providing a friendly visitor, sensory stimulation, validation, and individual instruction;
- Reports to the Activities Director on resident’s responses and/or progress to specific approaches utilized and may maintain written record of the same including participation in interdisciplinary care plans;
- Maintains an on-going inventory of departmental supplies and equipment maintenance and reports needs to the Activities Director;
- May be responsible for general housekeeping duties in activity areas including, rearranging furniture that may have been moved, removing refuse and picking up litter from the floor, returning equipment and/or supplies to appropriate storage areas, assisting residents in transportation to other areas of the building etc.
- Attends in-service training and continuing education workshops as directed by the Activity Director and ensures that a written record of such attendance is provided for facility records;
- Selects residents and communicates with nursing staff for the purpose of obtaining assistance in transporting such residents to and from the activity areas;
- Recognizes abnormal signs and symptoms which signify a physical change in resident’s condition which would require nursing intervention;
- Recognizes conditions that may interfere with the safety and well-being of residents involved in activity pursuits;
- Reports hazardous conditions to the Activities Director and/or Charge Nurse immediately;
- Reports to the Activities Director on the functions of activity services under
his/her direction;
- Abides by the established policies of the facility and the licensing agencies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Ability to work positively and productively with elderly and disabled persons; ability to prepare and maintain simple non-medical forms and reports; ability to follow oral and written instructions; Imagination, creativity, empathy, energy and a personal presence; ability to keep confidentiality.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma
AND:
(A) Six (6) months of experience in geriatric or therapeutic recreation; OR
(B) One (1) year of experience in a setting which shall have involved working in a care
support, activities, personal care, or recreation role with senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, or those with special needs; OR
(C) One (1) year of experience working as a Certified Nursing Assistant in a nursing home, working directly with residents.
