SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY ASSISTANT

DEFINITION

Under the general direction of the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) or under the supervision of an assigned administrator, the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLP/A) is to provide direct assistance in treating disorders in students related to articulation and phonology, language processing, hearing, and alternative and augmentative communication.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED

General direction is received from a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP).

Immediate supervision is received from a certificated employee.

No supervision is exercised over District personnel.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conducts speech-language screening, without interpretation, using screening protocols developed by the supervising Speech and Language Pathologist.

Provides direct treatment assistance to identify students under the supervision of a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Follows and implements documented Individualized Educational Programs (IEP’s) developed by a supervising SLP.

Documents student progress toward meeting established objectives, and reports the information to a supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.

Assists a SLP during assessment, including, but not limited to, assisting with formal documentation, preparing materials, and performing clerical duties for a supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.

Schedules activities and prepares charts, records, graphs, and data.

Performs checks and maintenance of equipment, including, but not limited to, augmentative communication devices.

Assists with speech-language pathology research projects, in-service training, and family or community education.

Assists with hearing screenings under the direct supervision of a licensed Speech and Language Pathologist.

Participates in meetings and in-service training programs related to assigned activities.

Operates a variety of instructional and office equipment.

Performs related duties as assigned.


CLASS QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Specialized communication systems and devices, such as Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).

Generally accepted standards of health, sanitation and physical hygiene.

Basic subjects taught in District schools including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.

Basic interests, attitudes and emotional development of the adolescent.

Personal computers and software including word processing, learning and educational software.

Language development in children.

Articulation development.

Learning patterns in children.

Student behavior management techniques and strategies.

Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Effective oral and written communication methods.

Basic record-keeping techniques.

Operation of instructional and office equipment.

Ability to:

Remain current in techniques and technologies associated with the specialized learning needs in language and articulation development through continuous participation in workshops, in-services and other training.

Work with students having a broad range of learning and/or physical disabilities and special learning needs.

Establish and maintain a cooperative and effective working relationship with students and other staff.

Demonstrate adaptability to changing circumstances and priorities within the learning environment.

Demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively as an educational team member.

Assist in controlling the behavior and activities of students in a variety of situations.

Learn, explain and apply District and school rules and regulations related to acceptable student behavior.

Operate standard office equipment including copier machines, calculators, and personal computers utilizing word processing, learning and educational software.

Perform routine clerical work such as typing, sorting, cutting, filing and duplicating.

Maintain accurate records.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Minimum Requirements:

Any combination of education, training and/or experience that could likely provide the required desired skills, knowledge or abilities may be considered.

Education:  

An Associate of Arts degree with a major in Speech and Language Pathology Assistance or a certificate of completion of a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program.

Experience:

A minimum of six months experience working with individuals with speech and language disabilities in a structured environment.

License or Certificate:

Incumbents must provide proof of current registration with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the time of appointment and maintain current registration throughout employment in this classification.

Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver’s license and the use of a personal automobile.  Ability to be insured and maintain vehicle and property damage insurance. Desirable: Written and oral proficiency in a second language.
