Career Description

The City of Glendale Police Department has opened the recruitment process to accept applications to establish an eligibility list for the position of Police Officer.

Starting 2024 salary is $69,621.07 with top pay at $88,840.78 after three (3) years. Benefits include Wisconsin Retirement Fund, health insurance, life insurance, sick leave, vacation, paid holidays, clothing allowance, deferred compensation program and a health reimbursement account. There are no residency requirements.

Lateral Entry Program allows opportunity for increased starting pay and vacation based on prior years of full-time Law Enforcement service. Hiring process includes a written test, interview, and assessment center.

To apply you must :

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Have never been convicted of a felony (unless pardoned)
  • No domestic abuse convictions
  • Ability to lawfully possess a firearm

Prior to appointment you must :

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have a Bachelor's Degree, Associates Degree in Police Science or L.E.S.B Certified with a minimum of sixty (60) college level credits.
  • Possess a valid Driver's License.

    Duties / Responsiblities

  • Works in hazardous conditions or dangerous situations.
  • Perform all duties involved in the protection of life and property.
  • May warn, ticket or arrest violators of City ordinances, State and Federal laws.
  • Enforce traffic and parking laws.
  • Familiarizes self with the City and persons living in the area.
  • Notes and investigates suspicious persons and establishments.
  • Reports hazards.
  • Disperses unruly crowds at public gatherings.
  • Renders first aid at accidents, and investigates causes and results of accident.
  • Directs and reroutes traffic around fires or other disruptions.
  • Inspects public establishments requiring licenses to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Warns or arrests persons violating animal ordinances.
  • Writes and files daily reports.
  • Drives patrol vehicle in under normal and adverse conditions.
  • Investigates crimes, suspicious circumstances and other incidents as required.
  • Becomes familiar with persons of bad character and notes their habits, associates, premises they enter and keep a record of the same.
  • Observe any neglected child or homeless person who depends upon the public for support and report the same.
  • Attend training sessions as assigned.
  • Perform parade and crowd control duties.
  • Serve as a relief desk officer as needed.
  • Attend Court appearances as required.

  • Educational requirements include either an Associates Degree in Police Science, Bachelor's Degree in any field, or Wisconsin L.E.S.B. certification with at least 60 college credits by date of hire.

    One (1) year of service Ten (10) working days

    No carry-over provision

    Sick Leave

    Full-time employee shall earn 12 sick leave days on January 1 of each year.

    Holiday

    12 paid holidays at 8.5 hours (85 hours) paid on December 10. Days off may be taken in lieu of payment.

    Wisconsin Retirement

    Officers are required to pay the employee portion of Wisconsin Retirement. In 2023, this amount is 6.88%.

    Long Term Disability

    Long Term Disability insurance is provided by the City. Employees pay 50% of the premium. There is a 90 day waiting period for new employees.

    Life Insurance

    New employees, not previously in WRS, are eligible for enrollment 6 months from the start date.

    Health Insurance

    The City pays 88% of the lowest cost plan available under State Health Plan in the City's service area (Milwaukee County).

    Dental Insurance

    The offers the option for employees to participate in Delta Dental at their own expense.

    Deferred Compensation (457D)

    The City offers three different plans for contributing to Deferred Compensation at the employee's expense.
