The Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner will plan, direct, and evaluate resident and employee health care in ambulatory health services; examine and treat chronic and acute episodic illnesses, minor injuries, accidents, and other injuries / illnesses; performs selected laboratory testing; offers referrals to physicians, write prescriptions, and perform office procedures within the scope of expertise, protocols, and available equipment. The Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner will also collaborate with a physician in the care and treatment of patients.

Duties / Responsibilities :

  • Examine new patients to orient them about services, to identify needs and treatment plans
  • Sees ambulatory patients in the health services office for laboratory testing, examination, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic and acute episodic illnesses and minor injuries. Refers to physician as needed. Writes prescriptions and performs office procedures within the scope of expertise, protocols, and available equipment. Schedules follow-up visits in office or unit as needed.
  • Performs physical examinations (pap tests, etc.).
  • Coordinates health promotional activities (providing printed information, routine testing, flu shots, mammograms, etc.).
  • Performs staff employment physicals, TB testing, etc. Examines staff after on-the-job accidents or injuries.
  • Acts as a resource person for decisions, planning, and policies affecting the health of patients and staff.
  • Maintains outpatient records. Records statistics and conducts research as deemed necessary by the institution. Compiles reports concerning ambulatory care at facility.
  • Collaborates with staff to identify patients' needs and to help develop plans to meet these needs.
  • Responsible for timely completion of documentation in patient records.
  • Serves as a member of committees dealing with health care.

  • Education and Experience :

  • Successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner or physician assistant program.
  • Current approval by the joint Board of Medical Examiners and Board of Nursing to perform medical acts.
  • Must be currently licensed in the state of Montana.
  • Because of the nature of responsibilities, it is preferable to have experience in counseling and teaching and have a master's degree.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Able to lift 100 pounds to assist fallen residents.
  • Able to lift 10 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • May be exposed to adverse indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, bloodborne pathogens, physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.) and chemical hazards.
