Description : JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE : Medical Assistant – Triage lead
JOB SUMMARY : Serves as a Triage MA who works directly and courteously with patients regarding medical questions and procedures, assists in minor surgical and diagnostic procedures, EKG, Holter and Event Monitors, Vaccines, ED Follow-up, Referrals, and other Nursing Ancillary services. When working in a satellite location, Triage MA will be primarily responsible for laboratory collection and related duties. This position relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job; persons must be able to take direction well and demonstrate understanding of such guidelines.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
1) Maintains a well-organized Triage dept. Prioritizing timeliness, promptness with efficient communication.
2) Maintains Triage schedule
3) Answers the nursing SOS chats
4) Cover shifts as directed by the FP Team lead or Clinic Manager
5) Works with patients in a friendly and effective manner on medical issues and concerns.
6) Assists all nursing staff by performing EKG's, Cerumen removal lavage, suture removal, etc. as needed.
7) Provides therapeutic injections and vaccines as requested by providers :
a) Vaccines, Testosterone, B12 etc.
b) Notification to providers and other nurses of changes by CDC, AAFP, ACIP in recommendations and immunization schedules.
8) Manage in-house pharmacy and dispensing medications as ordered by a provider.
9) Responsible for checking family practice supply area for instruments in need of cleaning prior to end of each shift. Restocks sterile packs as needed. Empty Sharps containers.
10) Maintain autoclave, GWS office AED, Rapid Response go bag, expiration dates and refrigerator temperatures.
11) Responsible for daily disinfecting and cleaning of immunization prep countertops.
12) Uploading EKG / PFT data from laptop into main computer system.
13) Responsible for Holter Monitor, Event Recorder, and Watermark & Overnight Sleep Study applications as well as retrieval of information at completion of study.
14) Maintains the medical supply stockroom(s) and orders supplies as necessary.
15) Answers the telephone for the on-call provider of the day if clinical assistant for that provider requests assistance. Relays telephone messages to the provider from the patients.
16) Communicates with pharmacies for prescription orders after obtaining consent from provider.
17) Communicates with patients, either by telephone or in person, and relays orders from the provider regarding their health care.
18) Checks the telephone frequently for voice mail messages. Responds in a timely manner to these messages, triaging effectively on medical issues and concerns.
19) In the event above responsibilities are complete triage nurse should offer to call pharmacies or perform other duties as requested by nurses. This may include evening restocking of exam rooms, disinfecting counter tops in exam rooms and procedure rooms
20) Maintains CPR certification and is familiar with the location and use of the crash cart.
21) Required to attend a minimum of 50% of all scheduled department meetings each year.
22) Demonstrates a true understanding of team-based care, emphasizing the following :
a) Working with Reception Services and provider in daily huddle to review daily schedule.
b) Setting up appropriate follow-up tasks, addressing standing orders and care coordination, including obtaining tests and referral results, etc. in collaboration with the Referral Coordinator.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION : Evaluated performance of assigned duties within the department and teamwork approach. Positive relationships with co-workers as well as patients also considered part of evaluation criteria.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP : Reports directly to the Clinic Manager / Team Lead
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS : Excellent communication and people skills. Must be able to work extra hours as needed to serve patients. Willingness to be a team player. Ability to use computers extensively in daily work activities.
Approx hours per week : _30 -35 hours __
